With brightly scrubbed faces and carefully coiffed hair, hundreds of young women crowded the walkways at the Tournament of Roses House on Orange Grove Boulevard in Pasadena on Saturday for preliminary tryouts for Rose Queen and Court. (To view an audio slide show of the tryouts, click here ) Jan. 1, 2011 will mark the 93rd Rose Court, a tradition punctuated by appearances at the Rose Parade and Rose Bowl Game, and, of course, lots and lots of glamour. Competing for one of the seven coveted spots has become a right of passage for San Gabriel area women, most of whom grow up admiring court members as they gracefully make their way down Colorado Boulevard each New Year's Day each year.

Members of the Don José Verdugo Chapter, National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution, honored five local students at its annual Good Awards ceremony held recently at Beckham Grill in Pasadena. The DAR Good Citizen Award is presented to students who are deemed outstanding for the work they do for home, school, community and country. They are selected by school faculty committees based on qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. This year five young women, all seniors, representing five local high schools were selected for this award.

Two La Cañada representatives were among seven young women announced Monday morning as members of the 2009 Pasadena Tournament of Roses Rose Court. The names of Mary Gaule, 17, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, and Quinn Young, 16, La Cañada High School, were announced Monday morning as hundreds of family, friends, media and Tournament officials gathered on the grounds of Tournament House in Pasadena. The seven young women were selected from a group of 34, which had been announced Thursday afternoon.

Soroptimist Int’l. of the Verdugos honors awardees July 20 Local community service club, Soroptimist International of the Verdugos (SITV), will host their annual Installation of Officers and Awards luncheon at 1 p.m. on Sunday, July 20, at the Brandview Collection in Glendale. SITV will present grant awards to their Women’s Opportunity Awardee, Violet Richardson Awardee and Breast Cancer Awardees. These awards are all signature projects of Soroptimist International of the Americas.

T he La Cañada Thursday Club has a proud 56-year tradition of sponsoring young women from our community in the ?Bal Blanc de Noel? presentation of Les Fleurettes Debutantes. This year, the Thursday Club will present 12 young women to society on Saturday evening at a black-tie gala to be held at the Omni Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. The Bal Blanc de Noel is the culminating event which celebrates their completion of a 16-month program of social and community service, as well as cultural education, personal development training and etiquette instruction.

National Charity League Inc., Glendale Chapter honored its high school senior members, the Ticktocker Class of 2007, at the Huntington Ritz Carlton in Pasadena on Saturday, March 10. The annual senior presentation is held in recognition of the many hours these young women have dedicated to community service through National Charity League during their six years as Ticktockers.
