An organization that gives out college scholarships to young women is hosting an ice cream social next week. The Glendale Area Alumnae Panhellenic event is open to high school seniors from Glendale, La Crescenta, La Cañada Flintridge and surrounding communities. Girls who have plans to attend a college and have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher may be eligible for a scholarship. Glendale Community College students who plan to transfer to a four-year college are also eligible for a scholarship.

Ten young La Canada young women are among the 30 finalists selected Thursday for the 2008 Pasadena Tournament of Roses Royal Court. Tia Strozier, a senior at La Cañada High School and a member of Girl Scout Troop 754, is working toward completion of her Gold Project titled "Girl Pack." Tia has partnered with the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office of Victims Assistance Program to provide much-needed personal care items for teens and young women who suddenly find themselves in protective shelters. Tia quotes staggering statistics, which state "domestic violence or intimate partner violence is a very common problem affecting more than 3.9 million abused women every year."

In her eighth appearance as featured artist, Descanso Gardens presents the impressionist oils of Gerane Mooney. Gerane will show her works, along with watercolorist Deb McDonald and ceramicist Anne Sears in a temporary gallery adjacent to the Boddy House, Descanso Gardens, from June 22 through July 19. Gerane is well-known for her sensitive treatments of young women in natural surroundings, using a well-developed French impressionistic technique....

Girl Scouts from Girl Scouts -- Mt. Wilson Vista Council recently toured Golden Eagle Moving Services, Inc., a United Van Lines agent, where more than 1.2 million cookie boxes are stored for the 2006 Cookie Sale, now through March 26. The annual Girl Scout Cookie Sale is the country's premier business learning opportunity for girls and reinforces Girl Scouts' core values. The sale generates funds for quality programs, resources and opportunities for more than 9,000 San Gabriel Valley Girl Scouts and Girl Scouts -- Mt. Wilson Vista Council.

Girl Scouts -- Mt. Wilson Vista Council and the Studio 2B program invite girls ages 11-17 to register for the Skin Care and Makeup Workshop from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 10. The workshop is part of the council's new STUDIO 2B program, a "By Girls, For Girls" approach. As part of the workshop, celebrity makeup artist Carolyn Simon will review skin care and makeup techniques. Plus, makeup application and hair-styling tips will be explored to bring out their best look. The fee is $10 per person.

Changing climate topic of Democrats? meeting The Cañada Crescenta Democratic Club will hold its next meeting from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 17, at the home of Lloyd Komesar , 5231 Redwillow Lane, La Cañada. The club will present JoBea Holt, Ph.D. , who will give a presentation on the science of and current evidence surrounding our changing climate. Holt was a research scientist at JPL from 1976 through 1999, where she studied climate change in arctic forests using satellites and the Space Shuttle.

La Cañada Flintridge resident Kate Hansen, 13, has recently finished the luge racing season as a member of the U.S. Luge Junior Development Team. Hansen, who is an eighth grader at La Cañada High, and 16 other young women from throughout the U.S. were picked for the development team last fall by the United States Luge Association. The team has been competing in Lake Placid, N.Y., and Park City Utah, Utah, since early November. The season starts in late October and ends in February.

Several young women who graduated from high schools in La Cañada Flintridge were awarded scholarships from the Glendale Area Alumnae Panhellenic. The Mary Ellen Gilstrap Memorial Scholarship, named after a longtime resident of Glendale and La Cañada Flintridge, honors ambitious women who are active in the community and graduated from a local high school. For the first time, the organization awarded two winners for the scholarship since it was created in 2006. Rebecca Villalpando, who graduated from La Cañada High last month, plans to attend Tulane University to study English this fall.
