Lynn Duvall Last week I wrote about two young ladies who graduated from CVHS five years ago. Amy Kong and Grace Paik came to visit earlier this month. I knew the girls during their teenage years. It was a treat to reconnect with them. Amy seemed much the same, but Grace surprised me. Her verbal skills have improved enormously. Grace was born in America. Her family moved to Korea, where Grace was enrolled in an American preschool. Later, she attended a Korean public elementary school, but continued to read and print in English.

A yoga program for those "beyond beginners" is being offered at Descanso Gardens. This class assumes participants have some yoga experience, but does not require a specific level of fitness, strength or flexibility. The class, which will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. Fridays, Jan. 12 through March 16, will be taught by certified instructor Cara Davis. This is a rigorous sequence of yoga poses for students who can maintain basic movements and breath coordination on their own while the teacher discusses particular details with individual students.

They don’t call them the golden years for nothing — that was the message Sunday at the first Lust for Life Senior Expo hosted by the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge. The event included more than 20 workshops featuring yoga, ballroom dancing and financial management. And two dozen vendors, including Verdugo Hills Hospital, the Pasadena Senior Center and the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club, distributed information about active lifestyle activities. Some attendees enjoyed back massages at the Health Source booth, while others played with rescue dogs from the Pasadena Humane Society.

The 6th Annual International Yoga Asana Championship’s Southern California Regionals returned Saturday to the Lanterman Auditorium, drawing 26 competitors of all ages. “The purpose of these championships is to demonstrate and educate the general public as to the life-renewing benefits of yoga,” said Rose Malmberg, owner of Bikram Yoga La Cañada and host of the event. This year’s Regionals was marked by a confidence that one day Hatha Yoga—that is yoga done as exercise—will one day be an Olympic event, on par with gymnastics.

One: People Who Babble Incessantly About Yoga — Yoga, yoga, YOGA! I have heard (at endless length) similar yackety-yack over recent decades from folk who felt that practicing T'ai Chi (doing Pilates, competing in triathlons) is the answer to LIFE. I do not disrespect those who have such a yen. I just wish they'd shut up and let me enjoy my own groove with tennis, hiking and dance. I'm okay with being spiritually shallow. It's a good life. Two: Tattoos — True confession, several years ago I considered getting one and drew up a number of complex and deeply meaningful designs.
