Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy will present "Alice in Wonderland," the timeless Lewis Carroll classic, to audiences Thursday through Saturday. Junior Brianne Howey of La Cañada Flintridge leads the cast as Alice, the little girl who falls asleep and finds herself in her own wonderland. Her journey introduces her to such memorable characters as the White Rabbit, Queen of Hearts, Humpty Dumpty and Tweedledum and Tweedledee. These characters and many more are portrayed by the 16 other students who make up the versatile cast, including Julia Musker and Molly Taylor of La Cañada.

The Looking Glass Wars By Frank Beddor Dial / Hardcover / $17.99 Ages 15 and up What if that weird White Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland was real? Frank Beddor writes a whole new take on the story, telling of a girl named Alyss Heart, Princess of Wonderland, accidentally coming into our world after war breaks out in her own. Alyss comes from a place where anything can happen as long as you imagine it. Alyss, as the heir to the Wonderland throne, has the strongest imagination next to her mother.

What do Lewis Carroll and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart have in common? This summer, 48 fourth- and eighth-grade actors and 23 eight- and 12th-grade actors have made Lanterman Auditorium come alive with the music, dance, comedy and drama of these two classic writers. Both adaptations by director Koni McCurdy employ historical people to introduce the story. "Alice in Wonderland," adapted from Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," finds the real Alice, her sisters and school friends reading the book Mr. Dodgson wrote for them.

For more than a decade, Hansen, very much the embodiment of a California girl, has devoted her desire, determination, body, mind and soul to luge, speeding down tracks from Utah to Russia. On June 15, the Phoenix Mars Lander, managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory here, used its robotic arm to dig down into a trench called ?Dodo-Goldilocks.? As the arm scooped out soil samples it came upon dice-size clumps of bright, white material. The arm dropped the clumps to the side and scientists watched. Halloween was in the air at La Cañada Elementary and Paradise Canyon Elementary on Friday as both schools filled their playgrounds with pumpkins. Paradise Canyon had a pumpkin carnival that included face painting, candy and pizza sales and, of course, a yard full of pumpkins. Students walked carefully through the pumpkin patch as they chose the most perfect one. Hannah Sherman, 4 ½, wanted a small pumpkin. She already had her costume picked out for Halloween trick-or-treating.

The city of La Cañada welcomed the holidays with the lighting of the Glenola Park tree Nov. 30. The combined efforts of the Noon Kiwanis Club, La Cañada Girl Scouts and the City of La Cañada transformed Glenola Park into a sparkling wonderland. A record crowd of 350 gathered to sing songs led by Gaby and Larry Pry or with Otis Hutchins and the Wright Stuff Jazz Band accompaniment and Gaylord Hammerwold at the PA system control board. Mayor Anthony Portantino was the cheerful emcee for the event, which culminated in the traditional countdown and lighting of the Glenola Park tree.

Ten Years Ago ? The La Cañada High School Madrigal Singers, directed by John Kelsey, were invited to perform pre-concert music in the lobby of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion prior to a concert by the Los Angeles Master Chorale. Twenty Years Ago ? More than 600 Southern California Edison customers in La Cañada lost power (most of them for about 79 minutes; others about 107 minutes) during Super Bowl XXI, played in the Rose Bowl. Those unable to watch the game on TV due to the outage learned afterward the New York Giants beat the Denver Broncos, 39-20.
