Flintridge Sacred Heart beat Arroyo Grande today at the Glendale Sports Complex, 6-0, in the wild card round to advance to the first round of the CIF-SS Div. III playoffs. Jessica Ferri put a little extra oomph on the ball, striking out 15 in seven innings. ?This was our second time in the playoffs, the last game we lost in the first round, so we?ve definitely come farther than any other team [in FSHA softball history]. It?s something to be proud of and we want to keep doing what we?

With a trio of La Canada Flintridge boys' soccer teams earning spots in the CIF Southern Section playoffs, the road to the CIF championship begins Tuesday, but it's a road vastly different for the trio. Flintridge Prep begins play Tuesday in a wild-card match, St. Francis takes to the road in the first round of the Division I playoffs on Thursday, while La Canada awaits an opponent that it will host in the first round. The Spartans, fresh off winning the Rio Hondo League title, will host a Division V opener on Thursday.

Flintridge Prep?s Megan Musashi and Courtney Robinson made first team All-Area honors while their La Cañada counterparts, Stephanie Anderson and Leeza Sanfilippo, both made second team, as decided by the La Cañada Valley Sun, Glendale News-Press and Burbank Leader. Musashi was a dominating force this year, averaging 16.5 points and nearly five rebounds per game. She also led her team in blocks with 1.2 per game, and shot 48% in the field and 80% from the free throw line.

Flintridge Prep softball Coach Julie Jaime didn't know much about Paraclete other than it featured a strong lineup. Jaime then saw firsthand how strong the lineup could be. Flintridge Prep saw its season come to a close May 18, as Paraclete scored four runs in the fifth inning to earn a 4-1 victory in a CIF Southern Section Division V wild-card game. "They had some little bloopers and some big hits, and it wasn't a good combination for us," Jaime said. "Paraclete has got a good hitting team.

Though separated by two divisions in the CIF Southern Section, the La Cañada High and Flintridge Prep baseball teams have run through similar seasons in 2013. Both began 2013 with teams coming off seasons in which they failed to make the playoffs and both were looking to regroup under first-year coaches. And now, both have rattled off surprising runs to respective league titles, as the Spartans won the Rio Hondo League crown and the Rebels claimed a share of the Prep League championships.

As the strength of the Flintridge Prep girls’ tennis team throughout the 2009 season, the Rebels singles players have been predictably dependable. Nonetheless, no one quite foresaw the utter dominance with which they handled their Fontana counterparts in Tuesday’s CIF Southern Section Division II wild-card match at Scholl Canyon Tennis Center. Kira Lee, Jenise Vargas and Ali Preiss performed the rarest of sweeps, not just winning every set, but every game against the overwhelmed Steelers, leading the way to a 15-3 victory and a date with top-seeded Palm Desert on the road at 2 p.m. on Thursday.

In need of a goal, the La Cañada High girls' soccer team turned to Kara Lankey - something it's grown accustomed to doing all season. The Spartans' captain put her team on the board in the second half, cutting into a two-goal deficit La Cañada found itself behind in its CIF Southern Section Division V wild-card game at Nipomo High on Tuesday. “Kara is a good leader and the girls look to her for support and guidance,” La Cañada High Assistant Coach Anya Rosen said. “That's what she brought today.” It wasn't enough, though.

Jeff Becker, Senior, Forward, La Cañada All-Rio Hondo League first team and All-CIF Division V third-team pick had eight goals and 13 assists. Smail Belhamra, Junior, Forward, Pasadena All-Pacific League first-team honoree had 15 goals and six assists, including a score in Pasadena's 2-1 victory over Los Altos in the Division IV wild-card round. Matthew Bracht, Junior, Defender, Crescenta Valley All-Pacific League second-team selection was rock solid on the backline in helping Falcons march to CIF Southern Section Division IV crown.

Relegated to a wild-card berth to start the postseason, the La Cañada boys’ tennis team had a tough road ahead of it if it hoped to have a deep playoff run. However, the Spartans’ depth has helped them thrive in the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs. La Cañada, which finished third in the Rio Hondo League, has beaten two league champions to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. The Spartans (17-6) hosted Palm Desert in a quarterfinal contest Wednesday.
