A longtime La Cañada Flintridge resident received the National Medal of Arts award at the White House Thursday, Nov. 10. Ollie Johnston, who received the award in Washington D.C, was, for decades, an animator for Walt Disney Studios. "It was so big. Everybody that was a part of a newspaper or owned something big was there, and they were pleased with what they saw," Johnston said of last week's ceremony. "Everything was done to make it right for me. And everyone who was there spoke up for what I was doing."

We walked on Foothill Boulevard. Me, Big Len and Miss Audrey Hepburn. Miss Hepburn is our black Lab mix, a rescue dog from the Pasadena Humane Society. Suddenly, we heard the sound of a black helicopter. We looked up and saw a press release floating down from the Touchdown statue. I picked it up and began to read:   WASHINGTON — The White House and top La Cañada Flintridge lawmakers said they were likely to reach agreement Monday to help failing women’s clothing stores, as congressional drafters put the finishing touches on a bill.

Patriotism Lacking I drove to a market Tuesday, July 4 and realized that, although this was the birthday of our country, not one in ten houses displayed the American flag. Are we forgetful, lazy, or just don't care? Some who do fly the flag don't know the proper procedure to show respect for it. There is a Flag Code that tells us how and when to fly the flag. It also tells us where the flag is authorized to fly 24 hours a day: The White House, Washington, D.C. Washington Monument, Washington, D.C. Iwo Jima Memorial to U.S. Marines, Arlington, Va. Battleground in Lexington, Mass.

President Obama welcomed the Dalai Lama to the White House last week. The visit had been postponed since last year, due to concerns that it could ?trouble the waters ahead of a U.S.-China summit last fall,? according to a story which aired on KCRW?s ?Which Way, L.A.? The Dalai Lama visited the White House as a religious leader, not as a statesman. The Dalai Lama also appeared alongside musician Sheryl Crow in a visit to Southern California over the weekend, where he spoke on behalf of a nonprofit organization.

Twenty-two years ago when I moved to LCF, I had no idea that I was coming to 'a land apart.' My husband and I were married in our front yard and my daughter became our daughter. We chose LCF for the schools and proximity to his work and were thrilled with the neighborhood we joined on our block. That first spring our daughter came home from school, told of a classmate who was going to Hawaii for spring break and asked where we were going. I replied that I was going to work.

I am responding to Rhoda McComb's letter in the Sept. 23 issue of the Valley Sun regarding the war in Iraq. In defending the war in Iraq, Ms. McComb states that "September 11th [was] the start of this war." This is the big lie that the Bush Administration is pushing on the American public, and seemingly much of the public is buying. September 11th was a terrible event, one I'm sure that none of us will ever forget. We must do everything in our power to ensure that such an event is never allowed to recur.
