The Seekers of Black Diamonds My mom was born a coal miner's daughter. She came from a sleepy little holler called Monongah, a small town of 2,000 nestled along the Monongahela River in West Virginia. I loved her stories about my grandfather, Liberato Delasandro, who because of circumstance became a Stregone Guaritore (mystic and healer), tending to the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of what was left of Monongah after that fateful day. On Dec. 6, 1907, Liberato and his three best friends failed to show up for their shift at the Consolidated Coal Mine.

FOOTHILLS — Firefighters successfully cut off the Station fire’s march toward several foothill communities, leveraging favorable weather conditions to beat back the sprawling blaze, authorities said early Wednesday. The fire grew by about 13,000 acres overnight to 140,150 acres and remains 22% contained, according to the U.S. Forest Service. Officials were confident enough about area safety to lift mandatory evacuation orders for all communities in Glendale, which had been in place overnight Tuesday.

A talented cast has worked for months to bring "Bat Boy: The Musical" to the La Canada High School stage. Inspired by fabricated reports in a tabloid newspaper, playwrights Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming have intertwined outrageous comedy and an unlikely love story with Laurence O'Keefe's entertaining rock score to create a musical with a moving message. The story is set in a small town where three teens discover a beastly boy with pointy ears in a West Virginia cave and take him into town for veterinary care.

Democratic Party candidates have been trying for nearly three decades to defeat San Dimas Congressman David Dreier, who has been serving in the House of Representatives since his election in 1980 as a Ronald Reagan Republican. Dreier has served in the district ever since, defeating a string of under financed and little known opponents. After the 2000 reapportionment, the 26th District was redrawn to include La Cañada Flintridge and La Crescenta. His major opponent this year, Rancho Cucamonga businessman Russ Warner, believes that pattern could change in 2008, a year in which politics has been difficult to predict.

The new Common Core State Standards and computerized state exams that students will begin taking in upcoming weeks were up for discussion Tuesday night at the La Cañada home of Glendale Council PTA President Sandy Russell, where State Supt. Tom Torlakson fielded questions from about 10 local parents. La Cañada, Glendale and Burbank school districts are currently in the process of implementing the new standards that promote critical thinking, in-depth problem solving and calls on students to read more nonfiction texts.
