The La Cañada Flintridge Democratic Club will present a candidates' forum featuring the Democratic candidates for the 44th Assembly District at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26. Members of the public are welcome to attend this free event that will be held at the La Cañada Elementary Cafetorium, 4540 Encinas Drive. Candidates Brian Center, Diana Peterson-More, Adam Murray and Anthony Portantino will make brief opening remarks and then respond to questions from the club. The Crescenta-Cañada and Verdugo Hills YMCAs have recently redesigned their website, www.ymcacc.org, with a whole new look and a great deal of additional functionality not present on the old version of the site. "We've had a website for a long time and it has always come in handy for trying to keep members and others in the community up to speed on what's going on at the Y, but we felt it needed a bit of a facelift and a fresh approach," said Robin McCarthy, communications director for the Crescenta-Cañada YMCA.

The In Theory question-and-answer section will no longer appear in the pages of the Valley Sun, but will continue to appear on the newspaper's website at lacanadaonline.com/opinion/religion . The question posed to our panel this week: Should the prison at Guantanamo be closed? The next question pondered by the In Theory respondents addresses the popularity of a relatively new practice called speed-faithing: “Could you distill your belief into a 10-minute talk?” Their replies to that question will be posted on the Valley Sun website within the next few days.

Members of the La Cañada Flintridge Republican Club now have a club website www.lcfrepublicans.org , according to Al Restivo, club chairman. The website was developed by board member Nancy Maclean and contains information about the club, its meetings and its programs. It also provides links to the state and federal party websites as well as links to the sites of local Assemblyman Anthony Portantino and state Senator Jack Scott. There is also a link to the website of local Congressman David Dreier and the White House.

When Suzanne O'Connor was a teen she would rebel against her mom, L.A.'s original Bargain Lady, Geri Cook, by going shopping at Saks Fifth Avenue and charging something. Now, years later with a daughter of her own, she is a "bargainologist" who hopes her daughter won't find her way to Saks Fifth Avenue with her credit card. "My mom is the one who taught me value," O'Connor said. "She taught me how to look for quality at a really great price and how to find those hidden places." This La Crescenta resident spends about six hours a day researching bargains, posting sales, talking to stores, working on her message board and writing articles for her online newsletter that she does for www.BargainsLa.

Property owners within the La Cañada Unified School District boundaries seeking senior citizen or contiguous parcel exemption from the $150 schools parcel tax for 2013 can find the forms at www.lcusd.net or at the school district's financial services office, 4490 Cornishon Ave. The forms must be submitted by June 28. Those who submitted the exemption forms for previous years do not need to reapply unless circumstances have changed. For more information call (818) 952-8386.

On this website, the public will find the weekly Christian Science Bible sermon read in churches around the world and studied by individuals throughout the week. The current week's lesson is God the Only Cause and Creator, in which understanding that God is the only cause brings healing ? to the environment, relationships, and the body. Members of the public may read or print a copy of this lesson at the LCF Christian Science Reading Room, bookstore and library, which is located at 610 Foothill Blvd.

While President Obama delivered his annual State of the Union address Tuesday night, members of the La Cañada Unified School Board updated the public on several matters related to the state of the district, from School Accountability Report Cards (SARC) to progress on guest access to the district's wireless network. A SARC provides a snapshot of school sites within the district and is annually made available for the public's information according to Proposition 98, a K-12 school funding measure adopted into the state budget.

Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada Flintridge has launched a new website that has gone global, literally. The website http://climate.jpl.nasa.gov allows the viewer to explore the global climate change. ?This website has attracted more attention than any other website I have worked on,? said Michael Gunson, JPL chief scientist for Earth science technology. The website covers a multitude of areas concerning climate change from raising sea levels to carbon dioxide levels.
