You’ve got kids — lots of kids — and you’re wondering how you’re going to fit them into that resort condo unit. You also wonder how you’re going to keep them all happy and, maybe most important, how you’re going to be able to get away from them. Even the most devoted parent, now and then, needs to decompress. The answer: a really big houseboat. Being confined to a boat might not immediately top your list of good things to do with large numbers of kids.

Although La Cañada senior David Hopkins won't get to play in a CIF Southern Section Division X championship game next week, he did cap his high school career with an outstanding honor. Hopkins was named the co-Most Valuable Player for football, along with Temple City's Shun Tsin Tsai, in All-Rio Hondo League lists released this week. The Spartans were defeated in the quarterfinals last Friday night by Lompoc Cabrillo. In addition, La Cañada teammates junior Devon Borisoff and senior Gamal Rady were named co-MVP in boys' water polo.

Steve Fekete Steve Joseph Fekete, born Aug. 27, 1950, in Pasadena to Joseph and Emma Fekete, immigrants from Hungary, passed away Feb. 25, 2010, of a sudden heart attack. He was 59. A resident of La Cañada for the past 25 years, Steve was proprietor of Hollywood Machine Shop for more than three decades. He was a devoted husband and father and enjoyed fun times with his family, being involved in his children’s sports activities as they were growing up. As a family, they enjoyed water sports, snow sports and traveled together.

Leadership and legacy are two words that come to mind when some La Cañada residents describe this week’s Valley Sun All-Star. Flintridge Preparatory School incoming senior Jeff Tobias is dedicated to doing more than the status quo and to making his community a better place to live. “Being a leader is just something I like to do. I like organizing things and I’d rather do that than just go with the flow. It’s good to have people look up to you,” Tobias said.

K-Kids collect books In February, Kiwanis K-Kids of the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge completed a successful Book Drive, collecting more than 1,000 books from the community and through Once Upon A time Bookstore in Montrose. Books will be donated to USC County Public Hospital, Toll Middle School, Union Avenue Elementary and several under funded preschools in LA County. K-Kids is a community service organization for elementary age students sponsored by the Kiwanis Club.

Patricia Glaser Patricia Truesdell Glaser, 61, of La Cañada, passed away on March 21, 2010. She was born in Middletown, Ohio on Sept. 20, 1948 to Clyde and Mary Truesdell. Patricia was an elementary school teacher for more than 15 years. She taught at La Cañada Elementary School. In addition to her husband, John, she is survived by a son, Stephen, of Istanbul, Turkey; and a daughter, Krista, an Oakland resident. A visitation and Rosary were held Wednesday at Crippen Chapel.

If you’ve driven Interstate 5 just north of Redding, you no doubt have marveled at the beauty of Shasta Lake, with its miles and miles of scenic shoreline — all with the backdrop of Mt. Shasta, one of California’s most recognizable landmarks. And you’ve probably noticed the clusters of houseboats as you cross the bridge over Shasta Lake. We’ve driven that route many times, and each time crossing that bridge, we were reminded that someday we wanted to rent a houseboat on Shasta.
