A team built around either Chase Borisoff or Symeon Stefan likely would have been a favorite to capture the Rio Hondo League boys' water polo crown this season. The fact that La Canada High had both talented senior utilities in the same lineup made it practically a foregone conclusion that the Spartans would capture their league crown. That was acknowledged in the all-league voting, which elected Borisoff and Stefan as co-most valuable players while tabbing an overall total of seven members of the Spartans that ran the table in league at 8-0 and finished 23-9, one win shy of the CIF Southern Section Division III title.

The La Canada High and Flintridge Prep boys' water polo teams both had a lot to celebrate this past season. Along with doing well in their respective leagues, the squads also enjoyed productive results in the CIF Southern Section playoffs in their separate divisions. The Spartans and Rebels added to their season accomplishments Monday when the All-CIF selections were released. While La Cañada boasted five of its players honored with All-CIF nods in Division III, Flintridge Prep garnered three selections in Division V. Making the first team for the Spartans were senior utilities Chase Borisoff and Symeon Stefan, while senior driver Alden Geller and senior hole/set Bryce Hopkins were named to the second team and junior 2-meter defender Peter Loaks made the third team.

After fighting their way to second place in the Prep League, the members of the Flintridge Prep boys' water polo team had a nice surprise awaiting them at the conclusion of their CIF Southern Section Division V playoff run - all-league accolades for four of their own. First-teamers Brian Kihn and Ethan Vandeventer and second-team recipients Diego Delgado and Carlo Sivilotti gave the Rebels (17-9, 7-3 in league) a significant presence on the all-league honor roll and further underscored a season of progress in which Prep finished two spots higher in league than the previous year.

IRVINE - In its run to the CIF Southern Section Division III championship, the La Cañada High boys' water polo team encountered a fair share of slow starts only to come through in the end. But the finish to the Spartans' season and Saturday afternoon's final following a slow start at William Woollett Aquatics Center in Irvine was just as frustrating as it was disappointing. With its top scorer and coach both gone from the match, the Spartans saw a tight finale slip into a one-sided finish, as third-seeded Martin Luther King won its first-ever CIF-Southern Section title at the expense of La Cañada claiming its sixth when the Wolves used a five-goal fourth period to pull away with a 14-9 victory.

IRVINE - With its offense having become a hopeless cause by the fourth quarter, defense became the saving grace for the La Cañada High boys' water polo team in its CIF Southern Section Division III semifinal match against Palos Verdes on Wednesday at William J. Woollett Aquatics Center in Irvine. The top-seeded Spartans took a three-goal lead into the fourth after leading by more than twice as much at one point, and only scored once in the final period, after doing the same in the third, but held the Sea Kings to just one goal of their own over the final 8:39 to hang on for an 11-8 win. “We played great defense today, all around it was a full team effort on all fronts,” said La Cañada Coach Devon Borisoff, who got 16 saves from goalkeeper Jeff Lee, as well as four goals apiece from Symeon Stefan and Alden Geller.

BURBANK - For a span of more than 12 minutes on Saturday afternoon, the La Cañada High boys' water polo team held visiting Corona Santiago without a goal. Equally impressive and perhaps more devastating, the Spartans riddled the Sharks for 11 goals in that same span. Behind an opportunistically dominant defense, a potently accurate offense and a tidal wave of momentum, No. 1 seed La Cañada made an emphatic statement with a 19-7 throttling of Santiago in the CIF Southern Section Division III quarterfinals at Burbank High.

Hoping to hit its stride in the CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs, the La Cañada High boys' water polo team took a confident first step in Wednesday night's first-round match against San Juan Hills at Burbank High. Led by six goals from Chase Borisoff and three apiece from Symeon Stefan and Bryce Hopkins the host Spartans lived up to their top seeding in a 17-7 win that was never close after the first quarter. “This is the first round and we're the No. 1 seed, so we're expected to win this game,” La Cañada Coach Devon Borisoff said.

La Canada High's boys' water polo team, having been ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section III, was expected to draw the top seed when the playoff pairings were released on Sunday. Flintridge Prep, on the other hand, hadn't been ranked higher than fifth in Division V all season, but was bestowed the No. 4 seed on Sunday. The Rebels, after finishing second in the Prep League, will host Whittier, the second-place squad from the Del Rio League on Wednesday in the first round.
