BOYS' WATER POLO La Cañada 16, Palos Verdes 15 (4OT): After slipping to No. 2 in the CIF Southern Section Division III polls, the Spartans hit the road to take on the No. 3-ranked Sea Kings in Division III in what Spartans Coach Devon Borisoff said "felt like a playoff game. " La Cañada's Symeon Stefan scored the game-winner and finished with five goals, as did Chase Borisoff. Alden Geller scored four times for the Spartans. "This is huge for us, we want to enter the playoffs as the No. 1 ranked team and this is a giant, giant step toward that," Borisoff said.

SWIMMING Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 109, Alemany 61: The visiting Tologs clinched at least a share of the Mission League title with the win Tuesday. Flintridge Sacred Heart (6-0, 4-0 in league) received two wins apiece from Kirsten Vose and Kate Herrill. Vose won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes 11.09 seconds and the 100 freestyle (54.60). Herrill captured the 50 freestyle (25.17) and the 100 backstroke (1:03.01). The Tologs can win the league title outright Thursday with a victory against Chaminade at Loyola High.

La Cañada boys? water polo bounced back this weekend with a big win over Division IV No. 4-ranked Royal, 8-7, in the Villa Park Tournament at El Dorado High yesterday. The win was a marked improvement over their first match against Royal in a scrimmage earlier this year when the Spartans lost 17-3. ?We were down 4-1 at one point,? said Spartans? Head Coach German Lopez, ?and the kids rallied. We outscored them 7-3 at the end.? La Cañada had some problems at the start of the year.

The La Canada High boys' varsity water polo team reached the finals of the Villa Park Tournament last weekend, but was denied the championship by Righetti, who won the title, 8-7. The Spartans had defeated El Toro, 14-3, in the 32-team tournament semifinals on Saturday and has dropped La Jolla Bishops 10-8 in the quarterfinals on Friday. The 9-4 Spartans, who are ranked sixth in the state's top 10 poll, played El Toro. La Cañada next traveled to Servite on Tuesday to open Rio Hondo League play, but no results were available at press time.

LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE - While the result was a lot different for both sides, the goal was the same in what was a blowout victory for the La Cañada High boys' water polo team and a lopsided defeat for San Marino, 22-6, in Tuesday's Rio Hondo League opener. Both the Titans and Spartans called timeouts in the fourth quarter with the result already well in hand to run plays and improve their squads with the rest of the league season and CIF Southern Section Division III playoffs in mind.

BOYS' WATER POLO La Cañada in South Coast Tournament : The Spartans had a tough draw early on in tournament play Thursday. La Cañada won convincingly over Villa Park in the first round, 18-7, but was defeated handily by Mater Dei, the No. 1 team in CIF Southern Section Division I, 25-7, at Servite High. Symeon Stefan led La Cañada with a team-high five goals against Villa Park, while Chase Borisoff added four more scores in a standout performance. The Spartans were no match for the Monarchs, who have won CIF Division titles the past four years and have a CIF Southern Section winning streak more than 50 games long according to OCVarsity.com.
