Formula stretches drug products [Re: “Baby formula thefts leave him sad,” Our Readers Write, Sept. 10] I appreciate Dr. Barnes’ concern for babies, and for the parents responsible for their care. He may be justified in citing Victor Hugo for all we know about the shoplifter, but it is highly unlikely. A quick Internet search would have informed him that the thief more likely had cash flow in mind than a hungry mouth to feed. Some months ago I wondered why baby formula was suddenly keeping company with the cigarettes, booze and cold remedies behind locked doors at a local grocery store.

On June 5, 1832, French writer Victor Hugo was sitting in a park crafting another masterpiece. Startled by the sounds of exploding cannons and screaming men, he dropped his pen and, instead of running for the safety of home, dashed toward the sound of the guns. He made his way up the narrow and winding streets of Paris and suddenly was amid barricades and flying bullets. He had stumbled upon the June Rebellion. The insurrection was a fight between the Republicans/students and the Monarchists/government.

The morning is perfect. I’m sitting at Penelope’s, inhaling the perfume of a chai latte while reading Sir Thomas Malory’s “Le Morte d’Arthur.” I’m captivated by the mystic hero, whose exploits are so vast and absorbing that poets created mythologies defining their essence. Heroes never die but sleep in the recesses of our mind waiting patiently for our call. We need them; they show us the way. I have resurrected my fascination for King Arthur. He has survived 1,000 years, and his fable has proliferated the seven seas.

“Old Glory” was flying high and so beautiful, adorning many yards in our city. It was a great Fourth of July celebration for many people I’ve talked with. I had a lovely time with friends who live in the La Vinia neighborhood. We dined al fresco and as the last of the beautiful sunset faded, we watched brilliant fireworks from several nearby cities. Hope that you had a fun Fourth. . This is a good time to gather tidbits from here and there so you will know what is happening around the community.
