In case you haven’t already found yourself gagging over the pre-holiday hype, Valentine’s Day is Monday. I just toss this tidbit out for the poor souls reading this who might take flak from their loved ones, should they overlook the big day. Although in my youth I had an appreciation for hearts and valentines, my enthusiasm for it waned in my early 20s when I worked for a bookstore that among its many offerings also carried Hallmark cards....

Valentine's Day comes early to the Pasadena Senior Center. The Center, located at 85 East Holly Street, will hold a Valentine's Day Sweetheart Dinner Dance on Sunday, Feb. 11, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The celebration, brought back by popular demand, will include a buffet dinner, a complementary glass of wine, live musical entertainment and dancing. The buffet dinner will be served from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. This Sweetheart Dinner Dance will also serve to launch the Pasadena Senior Center's new Singles Club.

Ten Years Ago La Cañada Flintridge resident Bernice Hardman celebrated her 100th birthday with a number of parties, large and small, around town. Asked for any longevity secrets she might pass along, she said she had none. But she also mentioned that while she had tried taking afternoon naps, they just didn't appeal to her as much as outdoor walks did. Twenty Years Ago The La Cañada High School boys' varsity basketball team clinched an unprecedented sixth consecutive Rio Hondo League championship.

When I think of Valentine?s Day I hearken back to childhood when we would make a mail box out of a shoe box to hold our Valentine?s cards. There was always the excitement of spending hours at home with red construction paper, white paper doilies and glue to make the cards, or getting the ?store bought? kind. Then there was the fun of opening up my mailbox at school and looking at all the valentines people had given me. At some point, the teacher required that we bring cards for everyone; we could not be selective as to who we gave too. There might be that one child in class who didn?

Valentine’s Day is approaching and romantic offerings scheduled around the holiday abound in La Cañada. Descanso Gardens, Lanterman House and La Cañada Presbyterian Church are all offering several ways for the community to get in the spirit of Valentine’s Day. The Chamber Singers, a select group of the La Cañada-based Towne Singers, will be showcased at a special afternoon concert held at the Lanterman House Museum on Valentine?s Day. The afternoon will include a tour of the house at 1 p.m., a champagne tea served in the courtyard at 2 p.m., followed by a concert of love songs, ?Love Is In The Air? in the beautiful ballroom of the historic home at 3 p.m. Towne Singers? director Beth Richey, and Melissa Patton, director of the Lanterman House Museum Foundation, agree that community spirit is generated when two local organizations come together for a cause.
