Matt Kohorst, a senior at La Salle High in Pasadena and a resident of La Cañada Flintridge, has signed a National Letter of Intent and has accepted a baseball scholarship to the University of San Diego. Kohorst, a 6'3" right-handed pitcher, is a two-year starter for the La Salle varsity baseball team. As a sophomore, he was First Team All-Santa Fe League and, as a junior, he was the Most Valuable Pitcher in the Santa Fe League and a Second Team All-Area honoree in baseball. In addition to the University of San Diego, Kohorst, whose parents are Shelley Allen and Bob Kohorst, had offers to play baseball from the University of Michigan and Loyola Marymount University.

Lindsay Brooke Shaller and William Rube Hayden II were united in marriage recently at St. Philip the Apostle Church in Pasadena. A dinner reception followed at the California Club in downtown Los Angeles. The bride is the daughter of the Honorable Frederick Shaller and Kimberly Shaller of San Marino; her grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Charles Shaller of La Cañada Flintridge and Dianne Wilson of Pasadena. A celebration for the engagement of Julie Baumgarten, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Baumgarten of La Cañada and Brian Dunstan, son of Mr. Jeff Dunstan of Seal Beach and Ms. Barbara Dunstan of Cerritos, and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Rodger Dunstan of San Marino, was given at the home of Jim and Joellen Yundt by the Yundts and Bruce and Judy Kelly. Relatives and close friends of the couple enjoyed a poolside dinner and cocktails. Julie is a graduate of Flintridge Prep, the University of San Diego and Brook's Institute of Photography.

Described as a ?gentleman and a scholar,? this week?s Valley Sun All Star also is a hero and an athlete. Brett McCreary, a senior at St. Francis High School in La Cañada, is a well-rounded, focused young man, who earns the respect of his peers, as well as the staff at the high school. ?One of the most outstanding things about Brett is that he?s a scholar and an athlete and a gentleman. Edward and Melinda Davis of La Crescenta are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter Heather Ruth Davis to Mark Gregory Masto. Heather is the granddaughter of Margaret Miles of Glendale and Allen and Lenabelle Davis of La Cañada. Mark is the son of Dr. Ambrose and Phyllis Masto of La Cañada Flintridge. Ann Cimmarusti, daughter of Amalia and Larry Cimmarusti of La Cañada Flintridge, and her longtime boyfriend Jeff Amaral, son of Emily Amaral of Manhattan Beach, announced their engagement this month after Jeff surprised Ann by proposing on the beach at the Del Coronado resort in San Diego. Both families were waiting there at the couple?s favorite resturant to greet and congratulate them and share the weekend surprise together. Ann grew up in La Cañada and attended Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy and after high school attended the University of San Diego where she received her bachelor?

Alex Bonifer and Scott Stephens, both seniors at St. Francis High and members of the school's varsity football team, have been selected to play in the 55th annual Al Malaikah Shrine Public vs. Private/City All Star Football Classic. This year, the game will be held in Citrus College in Glendora on Saturday, June 24, with kickoff at 7 p.m. Bonifer is a 6'4", 220 pound defensive lineman with a 2.55 grade point average. He will attend the University of San Diego in the fall. Stephens is a 6'1", 180 pound defensive back with a 3.00 GPA. Players from both public and private schools are selected to play in the game after a through reviews of game films, interviews with coaches and other individuals and a voting process that includes sportswriters and coaches.

Congressman Adam Schiff has announced that 13 student interns, including one from St. Francis High School, will be joining his Pasadena office from May to September. The students come from throughout the 29th Congressional District and will add several language skills to the already multilingual staff. Schiff staff currently offer Spanish, French, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Armenian and Arabic languages. Interns will add Cantonese, Farsi, Korean and Portuguese abilities. Schiff's 2005 summer interns attend Denison University (Ohio)

Eric Parker, a 2003 graduate of La Cañada High School, was recently awarded two scholarship awards from the University of California San Diego. Parker was awarded the Physical Sciences Dean's Undergraduate Award for Excellence in 2006 and the William M. Hawkins Jr. Award. Parker is a senior majoring in environmental chemistry at UCSD, and is also currently working as an intern under the direction of professor Jeffrey Bada at Scripps Institute of Oceanography. Funds for the dean's award are provided by the alumni of the UCSD Physical Sciences Division, which includes the departments of mathematics, physics, chemistry/biochemistry, earth sciences and environmental systems.
