The Allen Lund Company, a national third party transportation broker headquartered in La Cañada Flintridge, announced the promotion of Steve Doerfler to chief financial officer and the addition of Cynthia Lupica as in-house corporate counsel at the company's annual board meeting in March. Doerfler replaces Joe Hillman, who announced his retirement earlier this year. Doerfler earned a bachelor's degree in finance and management from the University of Portland, Ore. and his M.B.A.

At a gathering of family and friends, the engagement of Sarah Beth Smith to John “Jay” Frederick Walter was announced. Sarah is the daughter of longtime La Cañadans Loretta and Bob Smith, who recently moved to Pasadena. Jay is the son of Julie Walter of Carmel, Ind. and Ken Walter of Fisher, Ind. Sarah grew up here and graduated from Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy in 2000. In 2004, she graduated from the University of Notre Dame in West Bend, Ind. A first grade teacher in a Chicago suburb, she also attends Loyola of Chicago graduate school.

The University of Notre Dame Liturgical Choir will be performing at St. Bede Catholic Chuch, 215 Foothill Blvd., on Jan. 3 at 7:30 p.m. Typically, the Choir rings in the new year by embarking on a tour to bring its ministry of music to a wider audience. According to its Web site, the University of Notre Dame Liturgical Choir, founded in 1973 as the Chapel Choir, is composed of approximately 65 singers drawn from all areas of the undergraduate and graduate student body. The Choir regularly ministers at the 10 a.m. solemn Mass at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart, a French Gothic structure built in 1871 by University founder Father Edward Sorin.

The St. Bede Music Ministry will present the internationally acclaimed University of Notre Dame Glee Club in concert at St. Bede The Venerable Church at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 16. Founded in 1915, the 50-voice Notre Dame Glee Club has performed for millions on the concert stage and television. One of the best known and widely respected collegiate singing groups in the country, the glee club has a wide-ranging concert repertoire encompassing music from the Renaissance to the 20th-century, as well as spirituals, folk and popular music, and songs of Notre Dame.

Ten Years Ago … Sister Mary Denis, a math and computer teacher at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, celebrated her Golden Jubilee in the Dominican Order, which she had entered as a teenager in 1945. In 1960, she earned a master's degree in mathematics from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. Twenty Years Ago … A fire of suspicious origin destroyed a large storage building, consumed chemicals inside and partially burned a company pick-up truck at Your Pool Company, located on the northeast corner of Foothill Boulevard at Cornishon Avenue.

Mayfield Senior School is proud to announce the achievements of some of its top students. Amanda Yamasaki has received the designation of National Merit Semi-Finalist from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation based on her scores on the 2005 PSAT/NMSQT exam. Twenty-six students at Mayfield Senior School earned the designation of AP Scholar by the College Board in recognition of their exceptional achievement on the college-level Advanced Placement Program (AP) Exams. Four graduates in the Class of 2006 qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.

Hugh Wayne High Hugh Wayne High, born April 29, 1923 in Venice, Calif., to Wayne High and Velma Myrtle Beamon, died Nov. 7 in Portland, Ore. As a young man he graduated from Venice High school, played violin in the Junior Philharmonic Orchestra of California and graduated with an associate of arts degree from Santa Monica City College. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in December 1942 and was sent to the University of Notre Dame for the officer candidate program. The war intervened and he was assigned as pharmacist mate third class, and served aboard the USS Lycoming APA-155 attack transport ship.

Banners will soon be flying at La Cañada High School recognizing the success of the school?s proud sports history. ?We used to have banners that were 4 feet by 8 feet, made of satin that Coach Jim Harvey had,? said Randy Boal, recently retired athletic director of the school. The satin banners were taken down the last time the gym was painted. ?We didn?t realize how really dirty they were,? Boal said. He had them dry cleaned but after looking at the gym?s fresh paint and new graphics it was decided to acquire new banners.

He?s described by staff and other adults at St. Francis High School as a self-motivated, great student. Ryan Tixier is an honor student at the school, a tutor for other youths and a dedicated athlete. Tixier, a junior at St. Francis, was nominated as a Valley Sun All-Star for his positive attitude and impressive ability to complete every task he sets before himself. ?Ryan is a terrific student,? said St. Francis High School Principal and freshman English teacher Tom Moran. ?
