by Mary O'Keefe The Class of 2005 are hugging their friends just a little bit longer these days as they prepare for the next phase of their life to begin. High school graduation is a bittersweet time, with looking forward to an exciting future while holding onto to memories of the past Graduation ceremonies will be held tonight (Thursday). "I was pretty intimidated by being surrounded by older people," said Associated Student Body President Tristan Schulhof of his first day as a seventh grader at La Cañada middle school.

In a lopsided victory July 15, the Spartan girls’ varsity basketball team defeated San Marino 44-19 in South Pasadena league play. The team remained undefeated in the SoPas league, which ends next week. La Cañada had eight players available to play and they all contributed in a physical contest. Shannon Denney dominated the inside, Tia Chen easily broke through the pressure defense and led a very strong defensive effort. Denney ended up with 15 points (7/7 from the field and four rebounds)

Bits and pieces from the local sports scene: Elsenbach, White named to play in all-star game : Burroughs High girls' basketball standouts Lisha Elsenbach and Layana White of Bellarmine-Jefferson are the lone area players invited to take part in an upcoming all-star game. The locals will play in the 2010 War on the Floor/Future Stars Game at 4 p.m. June 12 at L.A. Pierce College. The game will feature a group of talented players who will be seniors in the fall.

The following are updates on local athletes at the collegiate level. Anton Arboleda (La Cañada High, 2010) UCLA golf junior: After leading the Spartans for a spell, Arboleda has moved his way into a similar role with the Bruins. It showed in the Pac-12 Championship and NCAA Championship-qualifying Tempe Regional when Arboleda finished tied for third and fourth overall. The La Cañada High graduate posted a team-best, four-round score of 278, which was two shots under par, at the conference tournament at the Los Angeles Country Club May 1. He opened the tournament with a pair of one-under 69 rounds and closed with even-par 70s in the final two days.

Drew names local to dean’s honor list Drew University student Caitlin Rose Guza of La Cañada was named to the dean’s list for the fall of 2007, it was announced in April. In order to qualify for the honor, Drew students must earn a grade point average of 3.4 or above.   USCB winter quarter honors Five La Cañada Flintridge residents were among those named to the University of California, Santa Barbara dean’s honor list for the winter quarter of 2008.

The current senior class at La Cañada High School is in the midst of the college application cycle. They should be reassured by the strong showing of last June’s graduates in their collective success in the college matriculation process. Of the 400 LCHS graduates from June 2008, 399 are currently enrolled at colleges throughout the country from Maine to Hawaii with more than three-fourths attending four-year colleges. A number of students opting for two-year colleges turned down offers of admission from distinguished four-year colleges.

The Sally Ride Science Festival is coming to Caltech on Saturday, March 19. The festival is the brainchild of Sally Ride, America's first female astronaut, and is primarily geared toward girls in grades five through eight, their parents and educators. That age group is a critical time for girls and science, since studies show that this is when they begin to drift away from their natural interests in science and math. That's a situation that Ride, the Ingrid and Joseph Hibben professor of space science and professor of physics at UC San Diego, has devoted a large portion of her life to reversing.

La Cañada High inducted three new athletes into its Hall of Fame in a ceremony before the boys’ basketball game on Friday. Of the three inductees, two were from the class of 2004 girls’ basketball team. Diahnn Futulan, class of 2004, was a varsity basketball star for three years. In her senior year, she was named Rio Hondo League Co-MVP and made All-CIF Second Team in her senior year. Futulan is currently ninth all time in the school’s single-season scoring list with 363 points.

St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church in La Cañada Flintridge was the setting for the April 1 candlelight wedding that united local resident Nicole Beauclair and Nick Maroutsos of Los Angeles. Officiating at the ceremony were Father Kevin Kester of St. Bede and Father Jim Torrens, a relative of the bride's. Nicole is the daughter of Jack and Cathi Beauclair of La Cañada; the groom's parents are Terry and Angelo Maroutsos of Ladera Ranch. The bride appeared in an Italian silk ivory ball gown with an angled rouched waistband and off the shoulder French lace neckline, designed by L'ezu Atelier in Beverly Hills.

Verdugo Hills Art Association has chosen two high school students to receive scholarships. During the organization's June general meeting two recipients from Crescenta Valley High School will be honored. Megan Nelson and Raymen Assaf will display their work and both will receive their scholarship checks at the general meeting on June 3. The presentation will take place in the Citibank Community Room at 2350 Honolulu Blvd. in Montrose. Megan Nelson is a talented senior who will be attending BYU in the fall with plans to eventually enter into the university's art department.
