Joseph and Nancy Abbott of La Cañada Flintridge announce the engagement of their son Craig to Philina Burkholder. Craig is a 1986 graduate of La Cañada High School and received his bachelor?s degree in computer science in 1991 from UC Irvine. He is a development manager with Oracle in Pleasanton, Calif. Philina is the daughter of Donald Burkholder of Medford, Ore. She was born in Colorado Springs, Colo., and graduated from Westmont High in Campbell, Calif. She received her bachelor?

St. Francis High School celebrated its 2006 Homecoming with a victorious football game and the presentation of the Homecoming Court on Friday evening, Oct. 27. Kacie Mele, a senior at Mayfield, was crowned Homecoming Queen during the half-time ceremonies of the St. Francis-Alemany game on Friedman Field. Kacie's court members included seniors Caroline Burkard of Mayfield, and Celina Schulenburg, Katie Barbaro and Isabel Rivera from Flintridge Sacred Heart. Members of the St. Francis senior class chosen as Court escorts were Ethan Hacker, Brent Meaglia, Sean Menton, Aris Onuma, and Matt Quintero.

La Cañada High School Friends of Drama presented $1,500 scholarships this year to students Ben Goldsmith and Walter Rodriguez. Both auditioned by presenting separate monologues. They also were interviewed by a panel of Friends of Drama members. ?Each young man did an outstanding job,? said Gale Caswell. She added that she has seen a tremendous amount of growth in each applicant. Rodriguez plans on attending UC Irvine, where he will major in pre-law. Goldsmith plans on attending UCLA, where he will major in musical theater.

Congressman Adam Schiff has announced that 13 student interns, including one from St. Francis High School, will be joining his Pasadena office from May to September. The students come from throughout the 29th Congressional District and will add several language skills to the already multilingual staff. Schiff staff currently offer Spanish, French, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Armenian and Arabic languages. Interns will add Cantonese, Farsi, Korean and Portuguese abilities. Schiff's 2005 summer interns attend Denison University (Ohio)

Craig Abbott, son of Joe and Nancy Abbott of La Cañada Flintridge, was recently married to Philina Burkholder at the La Cañada Presbyterian Church. The afternoon ceremony was officiated by Dr. Chuck Osburn. The bride?s attendants were her sister Ferne Watt, matron of honor; and her bridesmaids Kimberly Rogers and Terri Flannery. Philina?s nephews Andrew Watt and Robert Watt were ushers, and Robert?s stepson Nathan Ferro was ring-bearer. The groom?s attendants were his brother Douglas Abbott and childhood friends Alex Mateuchev and Richard Dowdy.

La Cañada Flintridge residents Steve and Ana Turko recently announced the engagement of their daughter Natasha Turko to Greg Gaudino, son of La Cañada Flintridge residents Tony and Cris Gaudino and La Crescenta residents Jan and Bob Canfield. Natasha grew up in La Cañada and graduated from La Cañada High School in 2002. She received her B.A. in criminology, law and society from UC Irvine in 2006 and recently started her master?s of business administration program at Pepperdine University.

The following are updates on area athletes playing at the collegiate level . ? Kathryn Poet (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2007) sophomore outfielder, University of Missouri softball: Poet, a former All-Area member, recently competed in her first College World Series. Unfortunately for Poet and the Tigers, their stay in Oklahoma City didn?t last very long. After opening the series with a 7-3 loss to defending champion Arizona State on Thursday, Missouri saw its season end Saturday with a 5-2 loss to ninth-ranked Georgia.

Flintridge Prep's Lindsay Fletcher and Tom McCullough, two of the last three local high school athletes competing in post season play, were stopped short in their endeavors last Friday. Fletcher failed to qualify for the CIF-State Track and Field Championships in the 100 and 200 meter events at the CIF Southern Section-Toyota Masters Track and Field meet at Cerritos College in Norwalk. Fletcher, competing in Division IV, finished eighth in the 100 with a time of 12.13 and sixth in the 200 with a time of 24.86.

The International Association of Blacks in Dance is holding its 17th annual conference in L.A. this year; the critically acclaimed Lula Washington Dance Theatre is the host for the event. The conference will bring together leading African-American dance companies, choreographers, students, dancers and educators to explore issues they face in dance. In addition to events at other venues, highlights of the conference will include two public showcase performances at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex at Cal State L.A., 5151 State University Drive in Los Angeles, by some of the country's top African-American dance ensembles on Jan. 28 and 29 at 8 p.m. There will be a pre-curtain talk on both nights at 7:30 p.m. with various artistic directors and choreographers.
