La Cañada's own Jump Rope Team, the Palpitating Panthers, will host the Amateur Athletic Union California Open Jump Rope Tournament this Saturday, May 13, in the North Gym at La Cañada High School. This is the tenth time this qualifier for the AAU Junior Olympic Games has been held here in La Cañada. The AAU Junior Olympic Games will be held in Hampton Roads, Va. in August and the first annual West Coast AAU Junior Olympic Games will be held at UC Davis in July. Six teams from Oregon, Northern California and Southern California are participating, including 30 Palpitating Panthers.

Gregory Brown was elected mayor of La Cañada Flintridge on Monday night, becoming the fifth current council mayor to serve as the city's chief executive. He succeeds two-time former mayor Anthony Portantino. Three-time former mayor Dave Spence was chosen as mayor pro tem, to serve in Brown's absence. Brown, in the middle of his first term in office, thanked his colleagues for their support and outlined an ambitious agenda for the coming year. He plans to expand the city's joint-use committee into a liaison organization between the city and the school district, and pledged to continue the efforts toward council cooperation.

Gwynne Erin Yadley, daughter of Dr. Richard Yadley of Pasadena and Joy McCallum of Los Angeles, was recently married to Gabriel David Vandervort, son of Don and Bobbi Vandervort of La Cañada. The intimate outdoor ceremony took place on Oct. 23 overlooking Johnston's Lake in Pasadena. The groom's brother, Christian, was best man and the bride's best friend, Jolyn Curtis, was matron of honor. The reception was held immediately following the ceremony in the lush courtyard of the Pacific Asia Museum in Pasadena.
