Services are planned for 10 a.m. Sunday at St. George’s Episcopal Church in La Cañada for Jerry Healey, lifelong announcer, lover of all things Irish, and genuine, kind-hearted Good Guy, who died peacefully Tuesday, Feb. 3, at City of Hope. Born in Scranton, Pa., in 1932, Healey began his career in Philadelphia when a scout came to his elementary school classroom and auditioned youngsters for a children’s serial radio show, “The Magic Lady.” All the boys in the cast wore knickers except Eddie Fisher, whose mother allowed long pants.

The sounds of basketballs being dribbled and sneakers squeaking on hardwood floor are still resounding outside of La Cañada High's north gym. The only difference is those who are making the noises are first- through eighth-graders, not high school athletes. It is the 25th year Tom Hofman is coaching the Spartans boys' basketball team, and the 25th year he is putting on the Spartans Basketball Summer Camp for youth players. "We try to teach them early, developmental basketball skills," Hofman said.

Early in the season, it seemed as though the La Cañada High girls' volleyball team couldn't catch a break. Its two top players - Micaela Anderson and Kendall Walbrecht - missed multiple matches because of injuries and the Spartans were forced to scramble with many lineup adjustments. When the seniors recovered from their injuries, they proved to be the lethal 1-2 punch that the Spartans expected. They proved their significance on the court, as Anderson and Walbrecht were named the All-Rio Hondo League's co-Most Valuable Players.

"I'm gonna rough you up, mate! You're going down, mate!" La Cañada's Devon Borisoff, three-time Rio Hondo League most valuable player and the unquestioned leader of the United States of America boys' 17-and-under all-star water polo team didn't need to turn around in the pool to indentify who was threatening him. It was Caleb Greig, representing the New Zealand 17-and-under all-star team. Caleb Greig, Borisoff's three-year La Cañada Spartan water polo teammate. Caleb Greig, Borisoff's best friend.

November 1991: Two-and-a-half year old Adam Malik approaches the three-and-a-half-foot high basket set up in the backyard of the Malik's California home, grabs a small rubber basketball, leaps as high as he can and stuffs it home. "He had to jump six inches in the air to make that first dunk," said Shawn Malik, Adam's father. "Somehow," said mother Fauzia Malik, with a laugh, "Adam could make that jump. He just loved to dunk." Fifteen years later, Spartan senior Adam Malik is still jumping.

LA CAÑADA - In 2006 and 2007, La Cañada High athletics created an awful lot of history in the pool and gym that are still talked about and used as comparisons for today's Spartans teams. A quartet of former Spartans largely responsible for creating those memories were inducted in the school's athletic hall of fame Sunday during the La Cañada Thursday Club's first annual “Honor the Spartan” program put on by the school's athletic leadership council. A trio of 2007 graduates from La Cañada - Devon Borisoff, Spencer Tompkins and Adam Malik - and 2006 alumni Jordan Thompson were all added to the list of the school's greatest athletes.

For the first time in two years, a La Cañada-area team didn't find itself hoisting a CIF Southern Section championship at the end of the 2012-13 seasons. The year was instead highlighted by individual success. It was in the pool where the most success occurred for locals with individuals from Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy and Flintridge Prep bringing CIF-SS titles home from Riverside City College in the CIF Southern Section Division I swimming finals and Division III diving championships.
