Sometimes the most unique getaways are off the beaten path a bit, and take a little extra effort to find. Such is the case with the Lazy Z Resort, a place well known by the families who have been visiting the resort since it opened in the 1940s, but not such a household name for most people. The Lazy Z is located in the Sierra Nevada foothills — Mark Twain country — where interestingly enough a small town was named after a couple of well-known writers: Twain and Brett Harte.

It’s the end of the year and you know what that means — it’s time to roll out the annual Cary Awards, our sixth consecutive year of reviewing the best and most interesting getaways we’ve found in California over the course of the past year. Sorry, recipients, we have not planned a big, fancy banquet to announce these, so no need to dress up. No need to check your mail either because we don’t send out plaques or certificates. All we do is share with our readers our favorite experiences from the past year and pass along a big thank you to our award-winners for making our visit memorable.
