My goodness, one more week and we will be dancing into La Cañada’s big Fiesta Days party. But before the high stepping begins here in LCF, I am still savoring the joyous fun I experienced at a family retreat in Boulder, Colo. Spring was in full bloom in this Rocky Mountain town. The fruit trees were showing off their delicate flowers of pink and white while the tulips, in vibrant colors of purple, orange and yellow, were swaying in the temperate zephyrs that wafted by. All homeowners in the city obviously got the memo that recommended that every front yard in the city must have a beautiful display of tulips, because it was a joy to cruise the many streets of the city and admire their beautiful gardens.

This flirty May weather is skipping right along its usual erratic path. One day it is 80 degrees and the next it is teeth-chattering cold, and it’s raining. All-in-all, May is a delightful month. It is my birthday month and I’ve always been enchanted at the concept of May baskets secretly left on your friends’ doorsteps, and at the concept of dancing around a maypole. I spent my birthday weekend in Palo Alto with my daughter Heather and her two children — Catherine, age 7, and 4-year-old Ryan.

Hal's daughter-in-law Heather Thomas was the party planner as guests enjoyed delicious chicken tostadas with all the fixings, cheese enchiladas, and traditional refried beans and rice. The food was surrounded by balloons and picture boards collected from Hal's childhood in Hollywood during the war years and during his family days in La Cañada with his wife Julia raising four kids.
