Polytechnic High graduation The Pasadena campus of Polytechnic High School honors La Cañada Flintridge graduates Philip Hall-Partyka , who will be attending Wesleyan University; Haley Malchione , who will attend Yale University; Benji Logan , who will be attending Northwestern University; and Simmons Borchert , who will be attending Bates College. Commencement remarks were delivered by Sheryl Sandberg, chief operating officer of Facebook.com . Polytechnic School held its 101st commencement June 5 in Pasadena.

Lucille Bourg Sauer, born Aug. 19, 1915 in New Orleans, La., died in Van Nuys on Feb. 25, 2004. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Josephine (Nunez) Bourg; stepmother, Nettie Churchman Bourg; husband, Leonard S. Sauer (JPL employee '56 to '83) and sister, Beverly (Mrs. Gilbert) Durand, formerly of Glendale. She is survived by her daughter, Shelley; son, Scott and granddaughter, Whitney. Lucille attended Ursuline, Newcomb College, Loyola and, on to her master's at Tulane University, becoming a social worker at Charity Hospital in New Orleans.

Several young women who graduated from high schools in La Cañada Flintridge were awarded scholarships from the Glendale Area Alumnae Panhellenic. The Mary Ellen Gilstrap Memorial Scholarship, named after a longtime resident of Glendale and La Cañada Flintridge, honors ambitious women who are active in the community and graduated from a local high school. For the first time, the organization awarded two winners for the scholarship since it was created in 2006. Rebecca Villalpando, who graduated from La Cañada High last month, plans to attend Tulane University to study English this fall.

Robert A. Ketch, executive director of Five Acres and responsible for the child and family care agency's dynamic growth over the past three decades, will be honored for his long and dedicated service at the organization's "Swingin' on a Star" annual fundraising gala Sunday, June 3 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the One Colorado Courtyard in Old Pasadena. Ketch became executive director of Five Acres in 1984 after serving as its director of professional services for seven years, and has been at the forefront of expanding and diversifying the agency's efforts to strengthen families and prevent child abuse through treatment and education in community-based and residential programs.

Hard to believe but the month of May just slipped by us almost without notice. June is here, and the kids are almost out of school. Vacation plans are about to commence as La Cañada families scatter hither and yon for their summer rituals. Well, I will be right here at my post. I have absolutely no vacation plans at all — I like to take pot luck and just see what happens. I'll keep you posted, of course. . The course was tournament ready, the weather perfect — not too hot and not too cold — what more could 120 golfers want for the Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services “Shot-at-a-Million” Golf Classic held on the Jack-Nicklaus designed Angeles National Golf Course in Sunland?

Three Scouts in Boy Scouts of America JPL Troop 509 were honored with the highest rank in Scouting, the Eagle Scout Award, this winter. Alon Atkins , Niels Hauksson and Matthew Upton are residents of La Cañada and students at La Cañada High School. La Cañada High Schools senior Atkins joined Palm Crest Elementary Cub Scout Pack 515 in kindergarten. In Cub Scouts, he earned many pins, including the Arrow of Light Award and participated in many Cub Scout events.

Following a tradition going back more than six decades, the La Cañada Thursday Club held its Bal Blanc de Noel on Saturday, presenting debutantes who have spent 16 months preparing for the occasion as part of the club's Les Fleurettes program. The young women have been immersed in social and community service activities, cultural education, personal development and etiquette instruction. The black-tie gala will be held at the Omni Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. The presenter for the evening will be Mayor Pro Tem Laura Olhasso.
