Ten Years Ago La Cañada voters seeking a change elected Anthony Portantino, Deborah Orlik and Jerry Martin to three open seats on the City Council. “The people have spoken and they want the city to go in a new direction,” said incumbent Jim Edwards, who garnered 13.3% of the vote. Twenty Years Ago Pete Magill, who was a Spartan long distance runner in the late 1970s under Coach Pat Logan, returned to the campus in the spring of 1989 to mentor the track team.

"Illuminating Trees" will decorate the landscape and set the tone for Descanso Gardens during the 2005 Holiday Festival. Beginning on the evening of Friday, Dec. 9, the festival will continue through Sunday, Dec. 18, with music, festive shopping venues, two family nights, an elegant dinner party and a family holiday brunch. Of course, there will be plenty of time to enjoy the landscape and the company of Santa Claus, making Descanso a destination for anyone looking for a memorable approach to the holidays.

Descanso Gardens admission increased Visitors to La Cañada’s Descanso Gardens will be paying more for admission beginning Aug. 1, the Board of Supervisors decided Tuesday. The Garden facility, established decades ago by then-newspaper publisher Manchester Boddy, is owned by the county, and jointly operated by the county parks department and the Descanso Gardens Guild. The new admission fee for adults will be $8, an increase of $1, and for senior citizens and students the rate will be $6. Admission for children 5-12 will be increased to $3 and the cost of the tram tour will be increased to $4. The last fee increase was voted in May 2004.

Hollywood horror is waiting for you every Friday and Saturday night through Halloween, Oct. 31, at Universal Studios. For thrill-seeking horror buffs, Universal has been turned into a network of scare zones and fright mazes linked together by the terror tram which allows visitors to personalize their itinerary of fear. Three special mazes have been constructed, each featuring the star of a particular horror series — Freddy Krueger of “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” Jason of “Friday the 13th” and the cannibal crunching stylings of the Hewitt family of “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” fame — just the thing for those tedious Friday nights.

Children's costume parades, family hay rides, pumpkin decorating and plenty more will keep visitors of all ages busy at the Descanso Gardens Pumpkin Roundup from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 23 and 24. Each day of this festive family weekend will begin at 10 a.m., with the first of two children's parades through the gardens. The second parade will begin at 11 a.m. Youngsters, most modeling their Halloween costumes, will march to the music of Banjo Dave, who will lead them to a host of activities for the entire family at an old-fashioned country fair.

Summer Twilight Thursdays at Descanso Gardens will find visitors sharing picnics with family, wine tasting with friends, power walks, quiet strolls and train and tram rides through the woods. On these special evenings, 6 to 8:30 p.m. each Thursdays in July and August, visitors will sip tea as shadows fall across the Japanese Garden, visit the Boddy House Art Gallery in the cool of the day and watch the summer sun sink low behind the trees at Descanso Gardens. All this, plus children's activities and botanical treasure hunts, lively Hort-How-To programs with experts from the Gardens' horticultural staff, and special snacks at the Gift Shop, are part of Descanso's summer Twilight Thursday evenings during July and August.
