First opened in the late 1960s, the shopping center is home to Vons market and TJ Maxx, and is owned by Vons Company. Consulting planner Roger Cantrell reminded commission members that in 2007 Vons submitted design plans to the city for an extensive, multi-million dollar renovation project. As a result of the economic downturn, however, the grocery firm put those plans on hold.

"Our Avalanche Ranch program will provide fun, memorable Bible-learning activities for kids 4 years of age to 12 years old. Each day kids will sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, nibble Chuck Wagon Chow, take on a daily challenge to let God's love grow into their homes, experience electrifying Bible adventures, collect Bible memory buddies to remind them of God's word, and create Bible point crafts they'll take home and play with all summer long."

Summer. Lazy days. I was walking down Foothill Boulevard with Miss Audrey Hepburn, our black Lab rescue dog from the Pasadena Humane Society. It was a nice evening and a lot of the regulars were out, walking their dogs. Suddenly Miss Hepburn stopped. There in front of us was an old, partly shredded copy of Gourmet, the now-defunct, formerly impeccable revista of foodie technique. Miss Hepburn began to paw and sniff at the soiled magazine. Why was she so interested? I looked down.

Supporting Fiesta Days in La Cañada over the Memorial Day holiday, the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada-AM happily served 620 French toast breakfasts to friends and neighbors on May 29 in Memorial Park. Twenty-five club members, assisted by ten Benjamin Franklin Key Club members, set up, cooked, served and cleaned up the meals that had people asking for Chef Rosemary Hook's Secret French Toast recipe. (She isn't giving it up; try to analyze it next year.) AM Kiwanis would like to acknowledge local businesses that contributed funds and food to our breakfast: orange juice from Ralphs La Cañada; bread, Ralphs La Crescenta; water, Vons La Cañada; syrup, McDonalds; milk and eggs, Trader Joe's; and cream and butter from Greenbergs.
