It was with great excitement that the long-awaited Sturt Haaga Gallery officially opened in the restored Boddy House garage and its newly built extension at Descanso Gardens. Although it officially opened to the public on Saturday afternoon, the media got a sneak peek at the beautiful gallery, a $2.1 million gift from La Cañada residents Paul and Heather Haaga, at a press gathering last Thursday. On Friday evening, just as dusk was painting the gardens in tones of soft mauve, nearly 150 guests, including many Descanso supporters and donors, celebrated the opening of the gallery at a cocktail party.

Join musicologist and pianist Priscilla Pawlicki at the Pasadena Conservatory of Music on August 16 at 1 p.m. for a free lecture and discussion on the works of composer Ludwig van Beethoven. Celebrated during his lifetime for his originality and expressivity, Beethoven continues to amaze and intrigue even modern audiences. Priscilla Pawlicki's lecture will illuminate the unique ways in which Beethoven used melody, harmony, rhythm and texture to transform the Classical style and pave the way for Romanticisim.

The La Cañada Junior Woman's Club is encouraging residents to shop local for their holiday gifts. The club is hosting a “shopping crawl” on Friday, Nov. 15. Shops along Foothill Boulevard will donate 20% of their sales to the club. The fundraiser will support the Ronald McDonald House and Haven House. Participating shops include The shops are located between the 1300 to 1400 block of Foothill.

Velda Newman is an internationally recognized contemporary quilt artist, author and lecturer from Northern California, Known for her large scale, mostly organic designs, Velda creates original quilts of exceptional beauty and craftsmanship. For the past 18 years, Velda's work has appeared in many national and international exhibitions and has been featured in more than 30 publications, including Quilter's Newsletter and Threads magazine. She is the mother of four and the grandmother of 10. Her lecture will be about inspiration and evolution.

While holiday shoppers spend fervently, to meet the holiday deadline, countless dollars in U.S. currency are exchanged between shoppers and vendors. But, what if that one $20 bill used to buy a gift was fake? Secret Service officials say all it takes are a few seconds of attention to avoid counterfeit bills. "They are of a very poor quality, but because everyone is in a rush ... a lot of that is missed," said Don Masters, assistant special agent in charge, for the Secret Service.

Always the leader, La Cañada has once again started a trend that is spreading across the nation. In keeping with the environment movement, the Green Fence is becoming the new home fashion statement. "It is so the wrong color," complains interior designer Sally D. Swatch. "It blends too much and has no personality." "Not so," counters professional painter Billy Brushgolighly. "The green fabric along with the fence for texture is the perfect counterpoint to the rigid lines of a building.
