The Leonards of Flintridge were good Catholics. The father, Bernard Sr., was an accountant with the Southern California Telephone Company. When his first wife, Mary, died, leaving three small children, Bernard remarried a woman named Margaret. During the 1930s, the family lived in the 4400 block of Commonwealth Avenue in Flintridge. They attended Holy Redeemer Church in Montrose. The older children had jobs. Bernard Jr. (“Barney”) worked as a bank clerk and played amateur golf.

Chris Petersen is a 1998 graduate of LCHS and a former Palm Crest Panther. I met Chris when he was in elementary school and I was an elementary school mom. He was a lanky, good-natured kid who grew up here in La Cañada Flintridge. His parents, Martha and Paul, are pretty cool, as well. Ten years ago, Chris enlisted in the Marine Corps. He was promptly deployed to Iraq. His folks and the rest of us held our breaths and Chris came home unscathed. He finished college and was commissioned as a second lieutenant.

James Joyce, the Irish writer, was asked how he began a new piece of work. "I stare at a blank page until my ears bleed," he replied. As I try to craft this 'write' about the La Cañada Memorial Day Service, I understand what Joyce meant. Penelope's is closed tonight, so a chai latte cannot work its wonders. I'm on my own, and I'm daunted by the enormity of the task at hand. How do I give an accounting of what I saw? We had 32 World War ll heroes under the canopy of the Memorial Park gazebo and at least that many Korean, Vietnam and Iraq vets.
