It was a warm midnight in La Cañada. The moon was a sliver. The stars were out. The air smelled like night-blooming jasmine. I was not alone. Miss Audrey Hepburn trotted alongside, step-by-step. Miss Hepburn is a black Lab-Chow, courtesy of the Pasadena Humane Society. She has adjusted to life in the Foothills. She has a Naval Academy collar, a Stanford water bowl and engraved stationery from Angel?s Nest. For the next few hours, Miss Hepburn and I roamed the Foothills. Searching, searching.

La Cañada's Memorial Park was the happening place last Sunday when Dean Colley's Hot August Nights Band, a Neil Diamond tribute band, rocked the town with the music of the famous singer. Instead of it being a hot August night, it was a temperate one with a gentle breeze wending its way in and out of the huge crowd that had come to listen to Diamond familiar tunes like "Sweet Caroline," "Crunchy Granola Suite," "Sing Sung Blues" and "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show."

Whoa! Somebody turned up the thermostat. Just a week ago I had two sweaters, a scarf, socks and warm boots on because I was freezing. Now I’m taking it all off because it has been pretty darn hot. Guess every year we have this spring heat wave, but I forget and it always creeps up to surprise me. My garden is loving it and the petunias that survived the frosty nights of the winter are all in full bloom. I like that kind of garden care—Grace does it. This weekend I will be slipping off to the 40 different greens of Ireland for a couple of weeks R and R with my younger sister.

Back in 1972 when Neil Diamond performed and recorded his Hot August Night album, I was a “wannabe” attendee. I've been regretting all these years that I wasn't there. I'm happy to report that 40 years later, on Aug. 23, I finally made it to the reprise of his Hot August Night concert at the famed Greek Theater. Wow! It was so worth the wait because it was the best concert I have ever attended. The man is amazing. At the age of 72 he performed for more than two hours without a break.

Following a tradition going back more than six decades, the La Cañada Thursday Club held its Bal Blanc de Noel on Saturday, presenting debutantes who have spent 16 months preparing for the occasion as part of the club's Les Fleurettes program. The young women have been immersed in social and community service activities, cultural education, personal development and etiquette instruction. The black-tie gala will be held at the Omni Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. The presenter for the evening will be Mayor Pro Tem Laura Olhasso.
