Student exchange group to meet AFS Intercultural Programs (formerly the American Field Service) student exchange information for La Cañada High School students for the summer of 2009 is available now and can be picked up at the LCHS Career Resource Center. A meeting to inform parents and students of the application procedures and the programs available will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17 in the LCHS Information Resource Center. All interested students and parents are urged to attend.

Foreign high school students are scheduled to arrive soon for academic semester and year-program home-stays, and the sponsoring organization needs a few more local host families. According to Pacific Intercultural Exchange Executive Director John Doty, the students are all between the ages of 15 and 18 years, speak English, have their own spending money, carry accident and health insurance, and are anxious to share their cultural experiences with their new American families. The student-exchange organization has programs to match almost every family's needs, ranging in length from a semester to a full academic year in which the students attend local high schools.

STS Foundation, a non-profit student exchange organization, is seeking host families in La Cañada for foreign exchange students. STA has been providing this service for the past 20 years and is hoping to find new host families in La Cañada Flintridge and connecting them with exchange students like Alessandra. She is a 16-year-old girl from Poland who has been studying English for 11 years and enjoys ice skating, volleyball, and languages. Linus is a 16-year-old boy from Sweden, who loves nature and reading about insects, birds and geology.

Dr. Charles Stanford Broberg passed away Tuesday after a five-year, courageous fight with carcinoid cancer. Funeral services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 4550 Raymond Avenue, La Crescenta, on Saturday, May 1. Viewing will be held at 12:30 p.m. followed by funeral services at 2 p.m. Charles, the son of Charles Wayne (Todd) Broberg and Lucy Owens Broberg, was born in Phoenix, Ariz. He graduated with honors from North Phoenix High School, where a wise choral director nurtured his passion and talent for barbershop, classical and all music.

CNN recently aired a documentary titled "Gary and Tony Have a Baby," where CNN's Soledad O'Brien followed a same-sex couple in "their struggle against the legal and personal obstacles to become parents" and their quest to achieve a life as mainstream as possible. How do you feel about gay couples having a family? Should they be allowed to adopt and be foster parents? What if you had a gay member of your family and they decided to have a baby through adoption, surrogacy or sperm donor?
