SK Group engages Pintoresco Advisors Pintoresco Advisors, LLC , headed by La Cañada Flintridge resident Joel Peterson , has been exclusively engaged by SK Group, a $76 billion global Korean conglomerate. Pintoresco Advisors will help SKC Inc., the U.S. subsidiary of SK Group’s global advanced materials division, launch its latest investment efforts into the U.S. and other markets. Using mergers and acquisitions, SKC Inc. intends to increase its U.S.-based revenues in advanced materials from $200 million to over $800 million over the next two years.

The La Cañada Unified School Board has recently identified its three top-priority strategic goals. These are goals that require considerable time and effort from District staff to research and identify options with implementation steps, appropriate benchmarks and accountability. The Board's first strategic goal, which has the highest priority, is to continue to research, plan, and implement comprehensive incremental class size reduction in grades 4-12. As background, initial fact-finding revealed that peer high schools had considerably smaller classes than LCHS, even after our reinstatement of the State-subsidized ninth-grade class size reduction program effective September 2006.

Recently I received a call from Terese Miller, the outdoor program director for the Mount Wilson Vista Girl Scout Council. “Dr. Joe,” she said, “Would you do security for the upcoming Girl Scout Jamboree at Glen Helen Park?” I’ve always been an experience junkie, so jumping off the abyss seemed natural to me. Rarely have I taken that leap simply to satiate the unquenchable pursuit of adrenaline. Instead, I am driven by novelty, which is much increased by the simple pursuit of its gratification.

One of the most frequently used and easily understood ways of evaluating schools is the comparison of standardized test scores. The state of California, in fact, has designed a formula for combining test results from different schools and different grade levels to give a single statistic for a district, the Academic Performance Index or API, which ranks it on a continuum of all California public school districts. As announced earlier this year, La Cañada Unified?s API of 915 is the third highest in the state.
