The La Cañada boys' junior varsity basketball team won both of its Rio Hondo League games last week. Last Friday's contest against host San Marino started off as a close match, but the Spartans pulled away for a 55-36 victory. Will Baldwin, Steven Johnson and Joe Robinson all put in strong performances. Points were also put on the boards by Peter Pereyra and Alex Martinian. On Feb.1, the Spartans took on the Vikings at Pasadena Blair. La Cañada won in a landslide, leaving little doubt as to whom the better team was. By the end of the third quarter, the Spartans had scored 77 points and were on a pace to score more than 100 points for the first time ever.

Despite a tremendous effort to keep the contest close, the La Cañada boys' junior varsity basketball team fell to Pasadena, 50-38, in nonleague action last Friday. The Spartans traveled to West Ranch on Monday for a nonleague game, but results were not available at press time. La Cañada will participate in the Calabasas High Tournament next Monday through Thursday. Against the Bulldogs, the Spartans dropped another hard fought nail biter. Early in the first quarter, it appeared like the Spartans were going to be in for a long game, but a great display of ball handling by James Shimoda and Will Omakawa helped to contain Pasadena to just four points in the second quarter.

The Spartans have a habit of putting teams away early this season. Friday?s home game against San Marino was no different as La Cañada?s fast start was enough to handily beat the Titans, 57-38. It was the Spartan defense that allowed them to win handily, limiting San Marino to just six first quarter points and did not allow the Titans to convert a field goal for nearly 8 minutes. ?We?re a real good defensive team right now,? said Spartan head coach Tom Hoffman. ?We?re getting a lot better.

It was a rather peculiar ending to the La Cañada boys' junior varsity basketball team's Rio Hondo League season last week as the Spartans hosted both South Pasadena and Temple City, the league's two best teams besides La Cañada. The game against South Pasadena on Feb. 7 was a neck-and-neck battle that really came down to the last minutes of play when the Spartans started to pull ahead and finally won a close one, 59-51. Will Baldwin each scored 14 points apiece to lead the team.

La Cañada High's boys' varsity basketball team continued their best season in years by defeating San Marino and South Pasadena high schools last week to extend their winning streak at 16 games, but there was a huge difference in how their opponents played. The first game was Jan. 17 in San Marino as the team had to endure low temperatures in the gym. However, the weather conditions did not have any effect on the squad, as the team held a commanding 22-14 lead and exploded for many points in the second.
