The Knights of Columbus will be sponsoring a pancake breakfast on May 6 after the 7:30 and 9 a.m. masses at St. Bede the Venerable. All of the proceeds will be used to provide scholarships for the eighth grade graduating class. Pre-event tickets are available for $4 for adults, $2 for children and $12 per family. Tickets will also be sold at the door for an additional cost. Tickets are available during the week at the school office between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m., or call the school at 949-4388.

Vera Rae Gehl, the mother of Msgr. James C. Gehl, pastor of St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church, was peacefully called home by her God on April 6, 2005. She was 80 years old. Born in Kenosha, Wis., she was most recently a 15-year resident of Murrieta, Calif. She leaves a husband of 58 years, four children, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She will be remembered for her faith, her family and her friendships. Memorial Masses were celebrated at St. Martha's Catholic Church in Murrieta on Monday and St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church on Tuesday, Interment was at San Fernando Mission Cemetery.

Celeste Anne Gage passed away May 14, 2005. She is survived by her son, Daniel W. Gage III; daughter, Ayne (Jack) Gage Baker; brother-in-law, Charles Gage; two nieces, Judy McConnell and Carole Paige; and a nephew, Ken Hardick. A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, May 20, at Cabot and Sons Chapel, 27 Chestnut St., Pasadena. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church in La Cañada. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Celeste's memory to the Heartland Hospice, 1000 Lakes Dr., #225, West Covina, CA 91790; or to St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church, 215 Foothill Blvd.

Last week, St Bede's hosted author and blogger Lisa Hendey. Hendey is the founder of the website CatholicMom.com. First Church of Christ, Scientist, La Canada Flintridge New website video features sermon The website of First Church of Christ, Scientist, La Canada Flintridge , www.cslcf.org , is featuring a one-hour video lecture by Ginny Luedeman of Salem, Ore. Titled “Finding a Sense of Home That Can Move Us Beyond Disasters,” it was sponsored originally by the Christian Science Church in Yorba Linda, at short notice in support of those members of the community whose lives were impacted by the fires that occurred in the area just before Thanksgiving.

Ten Years Ago Then-La Cañada Flintridge Mayor Carol Liu, a Democrat, announced her candidacy for the 44th Assembly District, a seat then held by Jack Scott. Today, Liu serves as the state senator for Senate District 21, which includes this city. Twenty Years Ago Wearing small black ribbons, La Cañada teachers called attention to their dissatisfaction with their salary scales by walking out on a luncheon provided by the La Cañada Unified School District. The mild protest took place during an in-service day meeting at Descanso Gardens.

T.K. and Angie Prime of La Cañada Flintridge have announced the engagement of their daughter Marisa Dolores to John Joseph Ryan. Marisa is a graduate of Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy. She received a bachelor?s degree in both English and studio arts from Loyola Marymount University, where she is an alumni of the Kappa Delta Sorority. She is currently an associate producer at Hallmark Channel. John is the son of Margaret Ryan and the late Frank Ryan of Pacifica, Calif. He went to Albertson?

Guy Silliman recently married Michelle Little. The wedding ceremony took place at St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church in La Cañada Flintridge and the officiant was Monsignor James Gehl. A reception held at Annandale Golf Club in Pasadena included many out-of-town guests as well as friends and family of the honored couple. Michelle is the daughter of Ann Little of Anaheim Hills and Dennis Little of Las Vegas. She is a graduate of El Dorado High School in Placentia and University of Southern California.

Nick Sercel and Andrew Nettles, students at St. Bede the Venerable Catholic School, were recently recognized as distinguished service award winners by local branch 374 of the Italian Catholic Federation. Branch President Al Restivo, and First Vice President Mark Mannarelli presented checks for $100 each to the young men at two meetings of ICF held in February and March at the St. Bede Parish Center. The boys were also presented with a framed certificate, which honored them for their distinguished service to their community, church and school.

A second series of conversational Italian classes will begin at St. Bede Parish from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays, beginning April 26. Professor Nancy Ammirato returns to teach the courses, which are sponsored by the Italian Catholic Federation (ICF). The focus will be on beginning and intermediate conversational Italian. Members of the Board of Directors of the Italian Catholic Federation branch at St. Bede the Venerable Roman Catholic Church were installed at the annual ICF Los Angeles Archdiocese District Council Installation Luncheon on Jan. 19. The event was held at Casa Italiana at St. Peter Church in Los Angeles. Locals installed were Al Restivo, branch president and first vice president of the district; Mark Mannarelli, first vice president; Maria DeSalguera, second vice president; Fiora Marcucci Murphy, financial secretary; Joseph Vinci, treasurer; Nancy Lieggi-Ammirato, sentinel; trustees Masmiliano Leonida Bastone and Rae Ann Mertz, and alternate trustee, Jack Kojimoto.

St. Bede the Venerable Roman Catholic Church will host a karaoke and baked potato event this Saturday. The event, which will raise funds for the Distinguished Student Service Awards Program, runs from 5 to 9 p.m. on May 18. The program recognizes junior high students who are active in the community. April 27 Burglary: 215 Foothill Blvd., 1:10 p.m. A 38-year-old Santa Monica man was arrested on suspicion of stealing money from donation boxes at St. Bede's Church. He possessed burglary tools and appeared to be under the influence of marijuana. La Crescenta April 24 Drug possession: Pennsylvania Avenue and Foothill Boulevard, 11:41 p.m. A 42-year-old man was arrested for possessing cocaine and Vicodin, and for driving on a suspended license.
