Though it’s tough to say just how comfortable he is with his new team, Mark Loretta certainly isn’t complaining. “It’s going to be a lot different back in LA than it is here in Arizona,” Loretta said to the Valley Sun at Spring Training in Arizona. “[But] this was the team I grew up watching. I went to my first major league game at Dodger Stadium, I used to go to 10 or 12 games a year. My memories were of Steve Garvey, Davey Lopes, Ron Cey and Bill Russell.

Shortly after the game ended, Zaun, a Glendale native and 1989 St. Francis High graduate, took off his equipment and tugged off his uniform for the final time before announcing his retirement on Sunday following a 16-year Major League Baseball career.

Bits and pieces from the local sports scene: Sanchez comes back from off-season surgery: Former Burbank High baseball star Freddy Sanchez is back to playing with the San Francisco Giants after off-season surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation. Sanchez had missed all of spring training and the first 38 games of the regular season after undergoing surgery on his left shoulder in December.

Bats and gloves have been stashed away for good. Cell phones and computers are the objects now being used by Mark Loretta in his new line of work. Armed with a new off-the-field job following a steady 15-year playing career, Loretta hasn’t shied away from learning baseball matters outside the lines. It’s a vastly different end of the spectrum from previous spring training camps and regular seasons, when Loretta spent countless hours taking batting practice, scooping up grounders in the infield and competing against the best competition the sport had to offer.
