Ten Years Ago School officials turned out for the ground-breaking ceremony signaling the start of work on Phase II-A of the La Cañada High School construction plan. The work, which was to include a student drop-off turnaround for the seventh- and eighth-graders, was targeted for completion by mid-June 1999.   Twenty Years Ago La Cañada Flintridge’s Teen Club Nine, which had been operating since October 1988 and averaging 40-60 youths per meeting, was preparing for its six-month evaluation.

My background is very provincial, so being reared in Catholic schools in the ?50s and ?60s I didn?t know a doggone thing about the birds and the bees, particularly the female anatomy. In those days there wasn?t a movie to explain where babies came from. We just thought the stork brought them. Let me tell you about the day that changed. I was in the eighth grade and my buddies and I were playing stickball in the street. The Spalding that we were using had lost its bounce. That was unusual for a Spalding, since they were the best balls made.

Karen Spalding with Dilbeck Realtors GMAC's La Cañada Flintridge office was recently congratulated by branch managers Lynn Beckenhauer and Carole Kunz as they applauded her as a quarterly sales leader. Spalding has been a full-time Realtor since 1977 and has specialized in the La Cañada Flintridge community her entire career. She has successfully completed several hundred residential transactions ranging from starter homes to major estates, during all economic and financial cycles.

Ten Years Ago : About 300 people gathered at the gazebo in Memorial Park for a candlelight vigil organized by the Justice & Peace Forum. The vigil called for a peaceful resolution to the U.S. conflict with Iraq. A large American flag with the words “Win Without War” was stretched across the front of the gazebo. Twenty Years Ago : Original owners of La Cañada's popular Reflections restaurant (where Dish is today), Bob and Gregg Smith, sold their 50% interest in the business to part-owner John Albright.

Ten Years Ago … A crowd estimated at 8,000 saluted and cheered as the 23rd annual Fiesta Days Parade moved eastward on Foothill Boulevard on Memorial Day 1996. Twenty Years Ago … After accepting the position of head football coach at La Cañada High School, Jim Wright of Florence High in Arizona notified athletic director Dan Brown he had changed his mind, due to housing costs here and the big job of moving his family. Meanwhile, spring football practice began at LCHS with assistant coach Mike Reno in charge.

The San Marino League presents the Silver Jubilee Art Walk featuring several of the historic Huntington Cottages and Gardens, located next to the Ritz-Carlton Huntington Hotel in Pasadena. The Cottages, originally built in the 1920s and '30s for families to escape harsh Mid-western and Eastern winters, have been nominated for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places. Families would send money ahead to have a cottage built to their specifications. The money served as rent for a predetermined number of years.

10-20-30 Years Ago Ten Years Ago A $25,000 fire at Palm Crest Elementary School was believed to be related to a burglary that occurred the same evening as the fire. After the fire, a plumber doing work for the school district found a duffel bag on the campus containing items that had been taken from Room 821: a fire extinguisher, jars of glitter, a bag of frozen peas (still cold), medical supplies and a computer speaker.   Twenty Years Ago “Big River,” a musical based on Mark Twain's “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” was the 1991 production of the Foothill Youth Summer Theatre, featuring a cast of 54 area teens and younger children.

Ten Years Ago New inductees to the La Cañada High School Athletic Hall of Fame in January 2004 were Jacki Tenerelli Asplund, Class of 1995; Sarah Ellis, Class of 1997; Matthew Moore, Class of 1998 and Brendan Naeve, Class of 1998. Twenty Years Ago It was announced no La Cañada Flintridge City Council election would be held in the spring of 1994 because no one other than incumbents Joan Feehan, Jim Edwards and Jack Hastings had filed to run. The election's cancellation saved the city $30,000.

Dark skies above La Cañada Flintridge reflected the somber mood inside St. Bede the Venerable Parish Tuesday morning, as hundreds of Los Angeles City Fire Department and Palmdale Fire Department firefighters gathered for the funeral of one of their own — La Cañada resident and Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Thomas Francis Dowling. Dowling passed March 30 after a six-year battle with cancer. He was 54. A bagpiper began the ceremonies by leading a procession of colleagues, family and friends into the church.
