Six Kiwanis Club Division 3 members traveled recently to Sacramento for an Interclub gathering. The first stop was at the Kiwanis Family House where Kiwanis Lt. Gov. Daryal Gant , representing his home club La Cañada, along with Diane Della Valle , president-elect; Patsy Christianson and Mary Gant were joined by La Cañada A.M. member Dave Hemstreet and Ted Ashby of the Eagle Rock Club. They were treated to an extensive tour and a spaghetti lunch.

A recent Thursday night about 9:30, already in my jammies, curled up in bed watching the TVO’ed treasures from the week before and reading (this guarantees I will simultaneously miss plot twists in both the books and the TV shows, resulting in irritation and annoyance to such friends and family members who catch me in such errors). Anyway, Connor phoned to say the UC Santa Barbara crew team would be competing in a scrimmage that Saturday morning in Newport, could the team crash at our place Friday night?

The Girl Scout Mount Wilson Vista Council will host a Girl Scout Pizza Night on March 29 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Round Table Pizza in La Cañada. Sales' proceeds from pizzas, sandwiches and/or salads will benefit the Montrose Program Center (Montrose Scout House). Since the 1970s, the Montrose Program Center has been the location for many memorable events for Girl Scouts. Many Brownie troops use it for their first "camp out" experience. There is plenty of room for troops to have meetings and hold events such as spaghetti night, holiday caroling, valentine making and more.

Preschoolers at Hogg's Hollow competed in a track and field meet created for young super achievers on March 17. The students showed off new skills polished on a daily basis since the beginning of the school year. In the Hogg's Hollow tradition, the St. Patrick's Day celebrations are enhanced by the school's annual meet where students compete in track and bike races, tug of war, rock-climbing wall and more. During the meet, Lety Geer, whose 4-year old son Evariste attends the program, helped start the contestants in the 4-year-old category.

La Cañada Flintridge Country Club's Sunday Night Family Buffet is the place to be weekly from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. On Nov. 20, club members enjoyed a lavish buffet while listening to the music of Simon and Simon. For the unbelievable price of $17.95, adults enjoyed a salad station consisting of a Mediterranean salad, Caesar salad, mixed green salad, and an Italian pasta salad. That followed with an ice station of sashimi, shrimp, cocktail, and smoked salmon. Entrees included chicken dumplings, a made-to-order pasta bar, barbecue ribs, saffron rice, and the vegetable du jour.

A gunman with a reputation for cleaning up corrupt backwater towns has taken up residence in La Cañada Flintridge, with an eye on north Glendale and the whole Crescenta Valley. A cutout of Clint Eastwood, in a pose from his 1964 Spaghetti Western “A Fistful of Dollars,” stands atop a hill near the Glendale (2) Freeway west of Verdugo Hills Hospital. Eastwood is steps off a trail that begins near Descanso Gardens and connects with other trails and fire roads in the San Rafael Hills.

The La Canada Water Polo Foundation team reports back on their European training trip. Thursday, August 16, 2007 Hey all you in LA, Everyone arrived in Budapest just fine. The Roszkos family met the team at the airport. Taylor was holding a sign that said "SPARTANS". After about an hour bus ride, we reached our destination. The hotel is clean and comfortable. It also has air conditioning. A very hard thing to find around here. Wednesday evening the boys practiced and scrimmaged against a Kecskemet team.

The broken glass in the stores have long been swept and La Cañada is back to normal after Tuesday’s 5.4 earthquake, but the late morning tumbler was a shaky preview of things to come. “We need to look at it as an earthquake drill,” said Kate Hutton, seismologist at Caltech. Peter Castro, La Cañada city public safety coordinator, agreed with Hutton’s warning. “It reminds us to be prepared,” he said. The earthquake was registered at a magnitude of 5.4, and could be felt throughout Southern California with reports of it being felt from as far as Arizona and Nevada.

Ten Years Ago After several months of consideration, the board of directors of La Cañada's community center decided to hold onto its formal name, the Roger Barkley Community Center, reported Timothy Gosney, then president of the board. The facility, long known to locals as The Youth House, had been named for the radio personality and philanthropist after his 1997 death. Today it is known as the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge.   Twenty Years Ago A former employee of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory filed suit in September 2001 against the lab and two individuals, saying he was laid off for blowing the whistle on cost overruns and mismanagement on a $175 million project.
