A small but intensely dedicated crowd huddled around the stage at La Cañada’s Memorial Park Friday afternoon to celebrate the John Birch Society’s 50th anniversary. According to the organization’s website, the society’s mission is “To bring about less government, more responsibility, and — with God’s help — a better world by providing leadership, education, and organized volunteer action in accordance with moral and Constitutional principles.

The 2004-2005 Metropolitan Opera National Council Regional Auditions finals will be held at Bovard Auditorium at USC on Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. The program will showcase some of the most promising young opera singers in the West. Finalists will compete before a panel of distinguished judges from the world of opera. This year's judges include Martina Malas, New York City voice teacher; Brad Woolbright, artistic administrator, Santa Fe Opera; and Harry Silverstein, stage director, De Paul Opera Theater.

Post-season honors are being handed out to members of the California legislature, and La Cañada Assemblymember Anthony Portantino has received recognition from two groups. Portantino was named ?Freshman of the Year? by the Faculty Association of California Community Colleges. He received his award at the association?s annual conference in Pasadena. Chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee, Portantino carried a number of major education bills, and is pursuing one into the second year of the session, a measure to allow students concurrent enrollment in high school and community college.

The Rev. Clifford L. “Skip” Lindeman was formally installed as pastor and teacher of La Cañada Congregational Church during a special service Sunday afternoon, marking the end of Lindeman’s seven-year tenure as the church’s interim pastor. Moments before services were scheduled to begin, Lindeman was found in the church’s Fireside Room, talking with colleagues. Asked what going through his mind seconds before entering the sanctuary, Lindeman said: “I am relieved and very grateful.

He was only supposed to be here for one or two years. The Rev. Clifford L. “Skip” Lindeman was selected as interim pastor in September 2002 to replace Pastor Charles Schepel, who left the then-Church of the Lighted Window after just one year. On Nov. 1 — seven years later — Lindeman was named the La Cañada Congregational Church’s new permanent pastor during a congregational vote held after Sunday morning’s service. The congregation voted 70-0 to elect Lindeman.

It seems to be the running joke at La Cañada Congregational Church: the Rev. Skip Lindeman has been the interim pastor for the last seven years . It was supposed to be a position the former broadcaster was to have held for only a few months, but he ended up staying for almost a decade.
