At this time of year, thoughts of Thanksgiving feasts tend to tinge when one considers those among us who will be forced to go without for yet another holiday season. Perhaps that is why, when local residents were recently asked to do their part to combat hunger both locally and globally, hundreds of people gladly raised their spoons and answered the call. Residents helped raise more than $6,500 at an ?Empty Bowls? soup dinner Nov. 14 at Crescenta Valley United Methodist Church.

Dining with Duvall By Lynn Duvall On New Year's Eve I cooked an ambitious dinner for my friends Judie and Pepe. When we finished, I asked them to be food critics and rate the meal. The overall dinner rated a B-plus. Bob, Judie and Pepe also graded each dish separately. You may recall that I mentioned I would be trying a crimini mushroom-mashed potato recipe on Christmas Day. I'd highly recommended a book which presented the side dish as part of a Christmas Day menu.

We were on our way to the LCHS awards night. Len drove. We were there for the 1st Lt. Todd J. Bryant Memorial Scholarship award. We go every year. Afterward, we gather to remember Todd. So, we were on Foothill Boulevard already when Len asked, What’s the difference? What do you mean? I replied. Len turned the corner. He asked, what’s the difference between a schlemiel and a schlemazel ? I was impressed. Even Rashi, the great Medieval commentator, couldn’t tell a schlemazel from a schmegeggy . Why?

Soup's on! If you're a novice cook, you will want to try today's tomato soup. Dana Jacobi, one of my favorite recipe creators, has discovered the merits of fat-free cream and uses it in her new rendition of tomato soup. I never had a Dutch oven. Dana's directions indicate you need one. I use a heavy pot with a lid, a bigger one. It works fine. As a young bride, this was the sort of thing that made me nervous. What is a Dutch oven? The mere mention of it in the directions would make me turn the page to look for another recipe.

Michael Pollan is one of my heroes. I've quoted him in many of my columns and been helping him carry the flag for years touting the benefits of eating a whole foods diet. And the benefits are many; a streamlined torso, reduced inflammation, expedited recovery and more energy. In his new book, "Food Rules," he offers 64 ways to eat food. He expands on his advice, Eat food, not too much, mostly plants in a lively way. We know plant that based foods offer the body necessary nutrients in a bio-available form.
