The La Cañada Junior Baseball and Softball Association will host a special softball clinic this weekend. The softball board has invited JustSOFTBALL to conduct the clinics. The JustSOFTBALL organization is made-up of former top collegiate players, college coaches, professional instructors and Olympic gold medalists. This is the La Cañada Junior Baseball and Softball Association's fifth year hosting a skills clinic for coaches and youth players. The clinic will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, Jan. 13, at the FIS field on Cornishon Avenue in La Cañada for rookie and junior players with birthdays in 1996 to 1999, and from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. for senior and super-senior players with birthdays in 1989 to 1995.

The La Cañada Junior Baseball and Softball Association will swing into their 2007 season this Sunday, March 11 with Opening Day at La Cañada High School. More than 1,000 boys and girls from age 5 to 13 will flood the field in uniform to take part in the Opening Day celebration. These local children will celebrate from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a variety of activities including team photos, a home run derby, golden arm contests and an In-N-Out truck to serve the youngsters lunch.

La Cañada Junior Baseball/Softball Association is now accepting registration for both baseball and softball. The league, which was formed in 1955, is open to all boys and girls from 5-17 years of age. All youths who register are placed on a team. Space is limited. Late registration starts after Jan. 11. Tryouts are held on Jan. 21 and 28 at La Cañada High baseball/softball fields. An exhibition softball game featuring some of the area's best players, ages 12 and 13, will be part of this year's Fiesta Days Weekend activities in La Cañada Flintridge. The game will take place on Friday, May 27 from 5:45 to 7:30 p.m. at La Cañada High's Varsity Softball Field. Proceeds from the contest will benefit the Community Scholarship Foundation of LCF. "This event promises to become a tradition in our community for decades to come. If people are looking for a festive and patriotic activity that offers great family entertainment, this is the one for you," said event organizer Mitch Lane.

Seven games into the season and the La Cañada junior varsity softball team is proving that they have some talent on the field. The girls have consistently defeated their opponents, and have a 6-1 league record to show for it (8-1 overall). The Spartans' only defeat was a 5-3 loss to Rio Hondo League rivals South Pasadena, who the team met again yesterday on home turf. The score was not available at press time. The highlight thus far of their season (barring a win over South Pasadena yesterday)

La Cañada has experienced a love-hate relationship with softball in recent years, with the high school team ranging from league champ to bottom of the barrel. But one youth girls' team is setting out to rekindle the town's lost love of the game. The La Cañada Junior Baseball and Softball Association supports the 12-and-under Gold softball "tournament" team among a handful of other similar junior-level teams, consisting of the best 8-to 14-year-old players from the organization's regular season.

The La Cañada/La Crescenta Under 14 Girls All Star Softball Team, enjoying one of its best seasons in a decade, finished in the top six at the California State Championship Softball Tournament in San Diego July 15-17. The team complied a 3-2 record in the tournament, including two thrilling come-from-behind victories, and is 10-5 overall. The best players from both the La Cañada Junior Baseball/Softball Association and the Crescenta Sports Association made up the 14-member squad.

BASEBALL Babe Ruth A?s 4 Dodgers 1 Travis Clark drove in two runs with a double in the bottom in the fifth to break up a scoreless tie and the A?s went on to defeat the Dodgers, 4-1. Clark also pitched four innings of shutout ball and combined with Greg Lupica and Sean Bird to give up only two hits during the game. Michael Cassutt had a RBI single and Greg Lupica had a RBI groundout to complete the A?s scoring. Matthew Van Wyk had two singles and Joey Robertson one single for the A?
