The Kiwanis Club of La Cañada recently gave out 'Terrific Kid' awards to some outstanding Palm Crest Elementary School scholars. Alex Kim is a member of the Student Council. He is also a member of the Peace Makers. Alex has been on the school basketball team for three years and has been a member of the school baseball team for two years. Skye Tereby is a member of the Peace Makers and she enjoys reading, especially fantasy stories. Skye is in the Gate Program. She plays All Star soccer and enjoys riding horses.

It was a tough transition moving to La Cañada in January from Phoenix, but 8-year-old twins Allegra and Gabriella Rendina have adapted easily to their new world and made the move a benefit to many who know them. La Cañada Flintridge Community Center Executive Director Megan Nordvedt nominated the twins for this week’s “double delight” Valley Sun All- Star. “Allegra and Gabriella are embracing La Cañada and they both really are a delight to have in our programs,” Nordvedt said, adding that she nominated the girls because they both have such positive outlooks and are always smiling and friendly.

No, Mr. Puglia, society is not becoming too sensitive [“Sensitivity and Gabrielle Leko,” Thoughts from Dr. Joe, Nov. 24]. I suggest that you read what Abraham Joshua Heschel has written on the topic of sensitivity. What I have concluded from Heschel's writings is that as sensitivity decreases, callousness increases. We raise our children to be kind to their family and friends. We hold workshops in the schools about bullying to put a stop to this type of behavior. Our social studies curriculum has been updated to teach our students about the Holocaust.

Hillary Kaiser, an alumna of People to People International Student Ambassador program, will continue her travels as student ambassador to Australia this summer. Last year, she traveled as student ambassador to the United Kingdom. She was selected on the basis of recommendation, including school references and personal interviews with members of a screening committee in her local community. She had to prepare for her overseas project by attending orientation meetings and studying background material on the United Kingdom and organizations she would visit, and presenting an area of her tour.

Five Palm Crest Terrific Kids were honored by the La Cañada Kiwanis at their luncheon meeting. This Kiwanis program is intended to publicly recognize outstanding students sixth grade La Cañada students. Attending this meeting were sixth graders Rachael Rubendall and her parents Daniel and Sherri ; Mathew Tonnemacher with parents David and Linda; Leo Meissner and his mother Maria; Bailey Holmes and parents Thomas and Tracy; Patrick Patao and parents Derek and Patricia.

Ten Years Ago Fourth-grade students at La Cañada Elementary School completed a section of their social studies unit in December 2002 with a lesson in making tamales. Their instructor was Blair Salisbury of El Cholo Pasadena. Twenty Years Ago The Descanso Gardens Guild signed a contract with Los Angeles County to administer and manage the local botanical showplace beginning Jan. 1, 1993. Thirty Years Ago An 82-year-old La Crescenta man who became disoriented on his way to Christmas Eve services in La Cañada was safely intercepted by law enforcement officers after driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of the 210 Freeway.

St. Bede the Venerable School held graduation ceremonies on June 4 beginning with a baccalaureate mass. Music was provided by the St. Bede Choristers, and Msgr. Francis Wallace celebrated the liturgy and delivered his farewell to the class. The graduation ceremony took place later in the evening where awards were presented and Amanda O'Toole delivered the valedictory address. Father Gregory Coiro was guest speaker. Family Reading Night is Feb. 5 At 7 p.m. Feb. 5 Paradise Canyon Elementary will host Family Reading Night in the school’s cafeteria. Join Michael Wright as he reads to kids and their familes from his larger than life picture books, “Jake Stays Awake” and “Jake Starts School.” The author will be signing books after the reading. Books can be purchased at the event.   Kiwanis host LCE’S Terrific Kids On Jan. 21, the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada honored La Cañada Elementary School students Natalia Dudek , Michael Seuylemezian , Sabine Puglia and Travis Martinez . Kiwanian Pat Flynn introduced the Terrific Kids and their parents to the Kiwanis and guests.

More than 770 students enrolled in classes this summer at La Cañada Elementary for grades 1-6 and at La Cañada High School for grades 7 and 8 for summer school classes sponsored by the Assistance League of Flintridge. The five-week program was under the direction of ALF members Polly Allen and Sue Sheedy. Since 1978, Assistance League of Flintridge (ALF) has provided enrichment summer school for La Cañada Flintridge students entering first through eighth grade. Most of the classes are non-academic and are designed to provide creative challenges.
