I hadn’t spoken to Smitty in 37 years. We served in the same regiment in Vietnam. We were friends; but distance and time extinguished that candle. Smitty was a Marine’s Marine, a great officer. For years he had been on my mind; so I called him. We shared our current lives and reminisced about a special Thanksgiving that we enjoyed together in 1970. We agreed that both then and now we had much to be thankful for. This morning I opened my old journal titled “1970” and read my account of that day: “It was Thanksgiving, 1970.

The Board of Directors and staff at the Roger Barkley Community Center are in their final phase of preparation for the organization's sixth annual Fall Fiesta fund-raiser to be held the evening of Saturday, Sept. 30. This year's event is again being held at the RBCC on Chevy Chase Drive. Last year's successful dinner party raised much needed funds for the community center to support the development of new youth and teen programs and activities. The event was well attended by parents of program participants, elected officials and community members all dedicated to the success of the RBCC.

On Thursday, Feb. 22, many Pasadena and neighboring area restaurants are participating in Dinners from the Heart, an annual Hathaway-Sycamores Child and Family Services fundraiser whereby local residents have the opportunity to enjoy outstanding meals at top-rated restaurants while, at the same time, help raise funds for the more than 10,000 children and families served by the agency every year. Approximately 35 of the area's leading restaurants have agreed to serve a specific number of meals to patrons who make advance reservations by donating directly to Hathaway-Sycamores.

The La Cañada Junior Baseball Softball Association (LCJBSA) will open its 50th anniversary season on Sunday, March 13. The day's events run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will include home run derby contests where one team from each division will win a Round Table pizza party, and a golden arm throwing contest. The players on one team in each division will win a Penguin's frozen yogurt. Sport Chalet will be donating prizes to the participants winning the contests for their teams.

The 9th annual Fall Fiesta at the Community Center of La Cañada Flintridge is more than just an annual fundraising dinner. This year, the Center is also celebrating 60 memorable years of serving the youth and families of our community. In 1949, the beloved center, which was built by dedicated volunteers, opened its doors and began its legacy as The Youth House. Sine then, its mission to serve youth has expanded to include adults, seniors, and families in the surrounding communities.

Leona Brooks Smith, whose late husband Gilbert ("Smitty") Smith was the longtime director of the La Cañada Youth House, died in La Crescenta on Oct. 24. Born in Los Angeles on Jan. 11, 1912, she was 98. She was married to Gilbert Henry Smith for 45 years. He preceded her in death in 1983. She was an office manager for Los Angeles City schools and was an active member of her community her entire life. She served in organizations such as the La Cañada Assistance League, Pioneer Club and Meals on Wheels.
