For those celebrating the birth of the Lord in the Philippines, being an early riser comes with the territory. During annual Simbang Gabi celebrations — a nine-day novena leading up to Christmas Eve — people in the Philippines celebrate Mass as early as 4 a.m. According to “Origin of Simbang Gabi” published by St. Bede’s Parish, “Filipinos were farmers or fishermen who either began or ended their day at dawn....

If you've watched Classic Arts Showcase (locally, it airs on KCET late nights) for any length of time, you've probably caught its mission statement, which tells viewers that it is the program's hope that by providing video clips of the arts, it "may tempt you, the viewer, to go out and feast from the buffet of arts available in your community. " I remembered this mission statement as I've been looking at the buffet, if you will, of Christmas events/celebrations taking place in our local churches and around the area in the next couple of weeks, including some food and gift drives.

St. Bede Catholic Church in La Cañada Flintridge, for the second year in a row, will hold the traditional Simbang Gabi in a community that has growing Filipino presence. The Church's second Simbang Gabi will be sponsored by the Filipino parishioners of La Cañada and will be held in the main church at 215 Foothill Blvd., La Cañada Flintridge on Monday, Dec. 19. The Mass will start at 7 p.m. and a reception will follow immediately at the parish hall with entertainment provided by The Combined Saint Brendan-Astoria Simbang Gabi Choir and The Marriage Spirituality (MS)

A celebration of the Eucharist in the traditional Filipino Simbang Gabi will be held at the St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church located at 215 Foothill Blvd. in La Cañada Flintridge on Monday, Dec. 18, at 7 p.m. The celebration is sponsored by the St. Bede Simbang Gabi Committee co-chaired by Grace Mercado Ouano and Ludi Cruz-Herrera. Simbang Gabi has been adapted from its roots in the Philippine Catholic tradition. It showcases the unique religious experience of the Filipino people that was fostered by their economic milieu.

The Filipino community of St. Bede the Venerable Parish gathered in a darkened church Wednesday evening to celebrate the sixth annual Simbang Gabi Mass. The Mass, celebrated by the Rev. Kevin Kester, began at 7 p.m. Lighted parols lined the side of the church, with the biggest one carried in at the procession at the start of Mass by parishioner Ray Quinto of Glendale. Parols light the way to Mass and symbolize the star the three Magi followed to find the stable where Christ had been born.

Simbang Gabi begins Dec. 19 The Filipino-American community of Saint Bede the Venerable Catholic Church will sponsor its annual Simbang Gabi celebration at 7 p.m. Dec. 19. The event highlights the rich spiritual and cultural experience of the Filipino people as they prepare for the coming of the Lord on Christmas Day. The Simbang Gabi (literally “Night Mass,” but more commonly understood as Dawn Mass) is one of the most popular and important Filipino Christmas traditions.

On Dec. 12, 1531, what is considered to be her feast day, the Virgin Mary appeared to the peseant now known as St. Juan Diego Cuauhtlatoatzin for the last time on Tepeyac hill, having first contacted him on Dec. 9, several miles from what is now Mexico City.
