Oct. 10, 1919-Sept. 17, 2004 Pasadena attorney John Howard Whatley, prominent in the legal, philanthropic, and religious community for more than half a century, died at his Pasadena home on Sept. 17, 2004 of complications from leukemia. He was a resident of La Cañada Flintridge from 1950 until he moved back to Pasadena in 1993. Born October 10, 1919 in Alabama, John received his bachelor of laws degree from the University of Alabama in 1941, enlisted in the U.S. Army as a private in 1941, and served in the South Pacific and the Philippines as a captain in the anti-aircraft artillery until his discharge in 1946.

Death has taken Clare Warner, one-time La Cañada Flintridge bank manager and civic leader. He died on July 15 at his home in Canton, Ohio, having been a victim of terminal Lou Gehrig's disease for 29 years. A Celebration of Life service was conducted on July 20 at Trinity Baptist Church of North Canton where he and his wife, Carole, have been active. Burial followed at Forest Hills Cemetery in Canton. The retired bank vice president, 75, began going downhill from his illness two years ago following a back operation not related to his ailment.

Charles Walter Beachman III Charles Walter Beachman III, 47 of Tujunga, passed away Dec. 5 at home after a long, courageous battle with cancer. Chuck was born in Norfolk, Neb. He graduated from Verdugo Hills High School in 1980. During his professional career he worked in computer technology at various companies, including IBM, apparel manufacturer Karen Kane and IHOP. Chuck was born on Jan. 24, 1962. He was the husband of Victoria (Vicki) Printup and father of Charles Walter (“Chip”)

ACTIVITIES Folk Dance Club: Winter Festival — Jan. 18, from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. International folk dancing will be the focus of the Winter Festival, which takes place at the Scottish Rite Temple in Pasadena. Attendees are welcome to either participate or observe. The annual event is open to all age groups. The Winter Festival, Scottish Rite Temple, 150 N. Ralph R. Beal Jr. Ralph Raymond Beal, Jr., 93, died in his sleep at Carmel Valley Manor on Feb. 15, 2010 from natural causes. Born on May 18, 1916 in Palo Alto, Mr. Beal attended Stanford University, Cornell University and graduated cum laude in aeronautical engineering from New York University. He worked as an aerodynamicist at Douglas Aircraft Company in Santa Monica from 1942 to 1953 and at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory as wind tunnel test manager, technical facilities design and construction manager and facilities office manager from 1953 to retirement in 1982.
