St. Francis High School will host a ?Call to Serve? bell-ringing ceremony at St. Bede the Venerable Parish beginning at 12:45 p.m. Sunday to mark 100 years of Franciscan heritage and service throughout California and Mexico. St. Francis High Vice Principal Rudy Trujillo will lead the ceremony. Bell-ringing ceremonies will also take place in Franciscan provinces in Santa Ynez, Solvang, Watts, Ireland, Mexico and Rome at the same time. The Capuchin Franciscan friars of the Western America Province, which run St. Francis High, will join minister general Rev. Mauro Johri in Watts for the international ceremony.

A celebration for the engagement of Julie Baumgarten, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Baumgarten of La Cañada and Brian Dunstan, son of Mr. Jeff Dunstan of Seal Beach and Ms. Barbara Dunstan of Cerritos, and grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Rodger Dunstan of San Marino, was given at the home of Jim and Joellen Yundt by the Yundts and Bruce and Judy Kelly. Relatives and close friends of the couple enjoyed a poolside dinner and cocktails. Julie is a graduate of Flintridge Prep, the University of San Diego and Brook's Institute of Photography.

Rides, games, food, entertainment and the Paradise Canyon Community Run will highlight the annual Paradise Canyon Elementary School Medieval Faire fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday on the school grounds. The community is invited to the all-day event, which is the school’s largest fundraiser of the year. The day will begin with the Community Run. The 5K race will begin at 7:30 a.m., and the 1 Mile Run/Walk will start at 8:30 a.m. with late registration available before the race.

Host Santa Ynez blanked the Flintridge Prep girls' varsity soccer team, 1-0, in CIF Southern Section Division IV first round lower bracket play last Saturday. The Rebels, who finished 13-6-4 overall and 6-2-2 in the Prep League, were eliminated from postseason competition by the Pirates who won the Los Padres League. Earlier, Prep shut out visiting Alhambra, 3-0, in a Division IV wild card match at the Glendale Sports Complex on Feb. 15. The Rebels took a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute on a goal by Keesha Wilson, with an assist by Lauren Von Der Ahe. Prep increased its advantage to 2-0 in the 76th minute on a goal by Kyle Edwards, with an assist by Von Der Ahe. In the 78th minute, Von Der Ahe scored Prep's final goal on an unassisted play.

When last year's hit movie "Sideways" came out, people all over the country were introduced to the idea that California wine-making doesn't begin and end in the Napa Valley. There are, in fact, several wine regions throughout the state, including the Santa Ynez Valley where "Sideways" was filmed. Dubbed Santa Barbara Wine Country by local tourism promoters, this is an idyllic and pastoral region of small towns, ranches and, of course, a few dozen wineries that are scattered over an incredibly picturesque countryside.

With all the hype you read in travel brochures and all the creative writing that finds its way to the Internet, it’s satisfying when you come across someplace that is actually as good as advertised. When the La Cañada boys' varsity soccer team scored its first goal in the 14th minute of play in the CIF-Southern Section Division IV First Round match against visiting Playa Del Rey St. Bernard last Saturday, little did the Spartans know that they had already won the contest. La Cañada (16-6-5) shut out the Vikings (9-9-2) the entire match and eventually won, 5-0, to advance to a second round contest against host Santa Ynez (25-2) on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time.

Bells tolled at St. Bede?s Church and around the world Sunday afternoon, from La Cañada to Ireland, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Capuchin Franciscan Friars of the Western American Province?s arrival in the West. The bell-ringing, hosted by Franciscan prep school St. Francis High, was held in solidarity with a celebration in Watts, where the province?s minister general, the Rev. Mauro Jöhri, visiting from Rome, led the celebration from St. Lawrence of Brindisi Parish.

Kiwanis installs its new slate of officers Nicholas (Nick) Berkuta lll was installed as the 2009-2010 President of the Kiwanis Club of La Cañada during the club’s Installation Dinner on Sept. 30, at the Oakmont Country Club. Also installed were President-Elect Bill Watts , Vice President Jim Stratton , Treasurer Bob Wallace and Secretary Skip Boyd . Diane DellaValle , Brian Fuller , Linda Magarian and Fred Schooley were installed as Board of Directors who will serve with Mary Gant , Harriet Hammons , Cory Stevens , Melinda Thompson and Paul Westmoreland . The immediate past president, Carl Christensen , will continue to serve as a club officer for the next year.

Watching her putter around her garden of flowers and vegetables or painting in the morning sunlight, it might be easy to picture Annette Hammer in Provence, France, but instead she is at home in La Cañada. "I have been inspired by the La Cañada environment — the small hometown, mountain village feel of the area," said Hammer, the artist. "Being able to have room to feel the soil, watch flowers and vegetables grow, and attend the unique farmer's market only a block from my home have all added dimension and depth to my painting."
