Christie Ann Manning, daughter of former La Cañadan Steve Manning and Joan Summers, was recently engaged to Joseph Marchese, son of Joe Marchese and Eileen Walker of Albany, N.Y. The event was announced at a lovely dinner party given by her father and stepmother, Beth, in the Sky Room at the top of the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles. The bride-to-be graduated from San Diego State University in 2007 with a degree in international conflict resolution. She studied abroad in England and Cyprus.

Rob Ward, the son of Lindsay Bozzani, has become engaged to Pamela Lynn Souza, the daughter of Paul and Sandy Souza of Merced, Calif. Rob, a member of the class of 2001 at La Cañada High School, met Pamela while attending San Diego State University where they both earned degrees in financial services. Rob is employed as a regional recruiter with LPL Financial in La Jolla and Pamela works in the yacht-insurance industry. The couple, who live in Pacific Beach, will wed in Coronado on April 2, the 67th wedding anniversary of the bride-to-be's grandparents.

Jessie Skenderian, formerly of La Cañada and now of Long Beach, has announced her engagement to Ryan Eckardt of Rossmoor. Ryan is the son of Mary and Jim Eckardt of Rossmoor and the grandson of Sylvia Amaral of San Diego. Jessie graduated from St Bede Catholic School in La Cañada Flintridge and graduated from Santa Barbara High School. She received a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from the University of California at Los Angles in 1998 and a master of science degree in sport psychology from California State University, Long Beach in 2003.

Andrew Beck, a star player on Flintridge Prep's boys' varsity basketball team, is one of 80 Southern California high school students who have been nominated for the 2006 McDonald's All-American High School Basketball Team. The 80 students are among the top 1,500 male and 1,000 female prep basketball players from throughout the nation who have received the nominations for excelling both on and off the basketball court. From the 2,500 nominees, selected by the McDonald's All-American Basketball Team Selection Committee, 24 finalists will be chosen for positions on either the men's or women's 2006 McDonald's All American High School Basketball Team.

Four La Cañada Flintridge students have been awarded scholarships from the AT&T Foundation, the philanthropic arm of AT&T Inc. The scholarships are awarded to students based on an individual's overall merit, including academics, leadership skills and work experience. Local recipients are San Diego State University student Alyssa Bosley of La Crescenta, and from La Cañada Flintridge, University of California-Berkeley student Valerie Chen, University of California-Irvine student Karun Gogna and Columbia University student Janet Lee. Each recipient will receive a $2,500 scholarship.

Since 1993, the SBC Foundation has invested a total of $35 million in student scholarships, providing financial assistance to more than 4,000 students. In 2004, 630 students will receive SBC Foundation scholarships for the first time, and 1,311 students will renew their scholarships. Local recipients include University of California, Berkeley students Eleanor Chen and David Kim of La Cañada, along with Brittany Harvey of Spring Valley, Kunal Gonga of La Cañada Flintridge and La Crescenta students Ryan Stoddard, Diana Pedder, Alyssa Bolsey, who are currently attending Emory, the University of California, Los Angeles; Claremont McKenna College; the University of California, Santa Barbara; and San Diego State University, respectively.

The San Gabriel Valley Junior All American Football Conference honored four former La Cañada Gladiator football players and two former cheerleaders with $1,000 scholarships at ceremonies on May 17. The scholarship program, which is unique among youth sports, was founded in 1972. Since that date, the program has awarded more that $218,750 to more than 250 college-bound students. To be considered for a scholarship, the graduating high school student must have participated in the conference as either a player or cheerleader for at least two seasons.

Great idea! That's what LCF City Council members said of the L.A. County Energy Program as they adopted a resolution joining and supporting that program. Never mind that the loans offered are incompatible with the terms of most mortgages. Don't even consider the implications of borrowing against property in the midst of a deep recession brought on by a mortgage meltdown — or that foreclosure rates are as high as they have ever been. Perhaps one might ask where debt-ridden L.A. County is going to get a billion dollars to fund this program or the wisdom of their entry into the home-equity loan business.
