TEMPLE CITY — It had been smooth sailing for Ryan Lee, a sophomore on the La Cañada High boys' tennis team, up until he was one game away from victory against San Marino's Nicolas Splichal in the third-place match of the Rio Hondo League Finals singles tournament. Splichal began to play his best with his back against the wall, but it wasn't enough to overcome Lee, who narrowly avoided a tiebreaker with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at Temple City's Live Oak Park Thursday. LA CAÑADA FLINTRIDGE - Offense has been an area of concern for the La Can¿ada High boys' basketball team this season. That continued through the first half Friday when the Spartans hosted Garden Grove's Pacifica in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division III-AA playoffs. La Can¿ada ended up putting together what Coach Tom Hofman referred to as one of its best offensive performances this season with a strong second half to pick up a 66-45 victory. "This is what we were looking for all year, this was a good team victory," said Hofman, whose team scored 21 points in the first half and 45 in the second for a season-high 66 points.

LC frosh gets second at Keppel It took a team effort to beat Montebello in the first round of the Mark Keppel Tournament on Saturday, 49-19, as everyone got into the game. Jack Anderson led the way with 11 points and 10 rebounds, Ryan Lee had 12 points, Jack Finnigan had nine points and five rebounds and Patrick Barron did the dirty work off the bench with five rebounds and two steals. Mario Del Cueto kept the Spartans alive with 19 points, four rebounds and four steals in their 44-27 second round victory over La Salle.

The board room fairly hummed with energy Tuesday evening while happy teens and parents assembled for the La Cañada Unified School District Governing Board?s official recognition of 20 La Cañada High School students who are National Merit Scholar semi-finalists. LCHS Principal Damon Dragos presented the awards to students, explaining that this recognition is based on a ?ridiculously high score? on the PSAT and qualifies students to apply to become National Merit Scholar finalists.

SOFTBALL La Cañada 8, Glendora 0: Lauren Cox was dominant yet again for the Spartans, tossing a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts Friday in the San Dimas Tournament. Her bid for a perfect game was broken up by a La Cañada error. Catherine Horner led La Cañada's offense going three for three with doubles and three runs batted in. Selina Mohr went two for three with a run scored and stolen base for the Spartans (3-0). BOYS' TENNIS Troy 10, La Cañada 8: The Spartans came in second place in the Claremont Tournament after losing in the final against Hart Wednesday.

BOYS' BASKETBALL La Canada 64, Monrovia 61 (OT) : Koko Kurdoghlian capped off an impressive performance in the Spartans' Rio Hondo League opener at Monrovia Wednesday night. The freshman finished with 20 points, as he sank two free throws late in overtime to put an end to the scoring after an off-target buzzer beater from the Wildcats. Senior point guard Ryan Lee also drew praise from La Cañada Coach Tom Hofman for his ability to control the game. The Spartans improved to 9-7, 1-0 in league.

After advancing to three tournament championships and winning two of them in the non-league play, the La Cañada boys’ freshman basketball team captured their second consecutive Rio Hondo League title. “We had 15 great players on our team and guys who really stepped up at different times throughout the season,” said La Cañada Head Coach R.T. Van Valer. “I’m proud of all of my guys. They were extremely successful all season long and they are going to be a force to be reckoned with the next three years.

Sarah Borland and Keilee Bessho had 11 points each for the Spartans (10-7, 2-0 in league), with Bessho adding six rebounds, three steals and three assists. Lauren Barsamian had 10 rebounds, three steals and three assists. Flintridge Prep 31, Webb 21 : The Rebels improved to 9-3 and 2-0 in the Prep League Friday, despite not scoring in the fourth quarter at home.
