The La Cañada Gold U10 softball team finished runner-up in the Rancho Bernardo Grand Slam Summer Jam tournament championship over the weekend. The team faced tough competition from the outset beating North Torrance while falling to Rancho Bernardo and Tierra Canyon in pool play. As the No. 12 seed in elimination play, they advanced to the title game by beating No. 5 Rancho Trabuco 2-1, No. 4 Corona 3-2, a rematch against No. 1 Tierra Canyon 4-0 in the semi-finals before coming up short against No. 2 Alpine 6-5 in the championship game.

The 12 and Under Glendale Knights baseball team finished runner-up at the USSSA Veterans Day tournament at Sylmar. The Knights lost a thrilling championship game to the West Hills Seadogs, 6-5, in seven innings. Starting pitcher Nate Rousey doubled, singled and scored a pair of runs. Royce Park ignited a four-run rally in the third inning and Rousey capped it off with an RBI double. Jay Cordero and Elliot Surrey also doubled. The Knights emerged from pool play as the top seed.

LONG BEACH — Their streak had to end sometime, and it did on Saturday night. The La Cañada High boys’ swimming team entered the CIF Southern Section Division II Swimming and Diving Championships at the Belmont Plaza pool in Long Beach as the winners of the past four team titles. The Spartans also knew that winning a fifth straight would be difficult to achieve, especially because they graduated seven swimmers last year. Alex Lopez, the Spartans’ coach for the past five years, expected a top-three finish, and that’s exactly what La Cañada delivered.

After a one-year hiatus, the La Cañada High wrestling team will return to the CIF Southern Section Division VI Dual Meet Wrestling championship tournament. The Spartans, who are tied for 10th with Santa Paula in the final regular season poll released this week, earned one of the division's five at-large berths, as was announced by the CIF-SS office Thursday afternoon. ALL-AREA SINGLES Andrea Kevakian, frosh., Flintridge Prep Compiled a 54-3 record in leading the Rebels to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs, where she was 5-1. Went 30-0 in the Prep League to win the league most valuable player award, and also won two matches to advance to the third round of the CIF Individuals Tournament. Maral Tavitian, junior, Westridge Performed well in the Prep League to earn a spot on the all-league singles first team.

Congratulations to Meghan Catherine Lacery, 11, a student in Mrs. Armine’s class at La Cañada Preparatory School, who was the overall winner of the Valley Sun’s 2008 annual “Thanksgiving in the United States” art contest, open to fifth grade students studying American history. “Since 1949 the Valley Sun has showcased a local fifth grader’s Thanksgiving drawing and we’re very pleased to continue the tradition today,” said Editor Carol Cormaci.

Congratulations to the La Cañada High School Varsity Boys Basketball Team for having a very special season in 2006-2007. Their achievements were endless with a 30-4 overall record. The first time at La Cañada for a 30-win season. The team was 24-2 in regular season including a 9-1 Rio Hondo League title. They won three tournaments ? Arroyo, La Cañada and La Salle. In post-season Southern Section play they were 4-1 and were the runner-up for the CIF-Southern Section-Division III AA crown.

Things are beginning to come almost automatically for the Flintridge Prep boys' varsity cross country team which won its fourth CIF Southern Section Division V state championship in the past six years last Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno. The Prep girls' team made almost the same impressive showing by coming in third in its race. The boys finished with 82 points, 33 points lower than runner up Woodcrest Christian, while the girls accumulated 92 points to finish behind winner Maranatha, with 82 points, and runner up Woodcrest Christian with 91 points.

PASADENA - Brandon Nguyen said he wanted to go out with a boom in his final high school season. For the La Cañada High boys' swimmer, it meant breaking three - two individual - Rio Hondo League records, including the oldest one left at the league finals Friday at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center. PHOTOS: Rio Hondo League swim championships Nguyen broke the 100-yard breaststroke record, which at 57.50 seconds had stood since 1992. The senior brought it down with a time of 56.69.
