One million spectators are expected to line the streets of Colorado Boulevard on New Year’s Day 2009 to watch as spectacular floats, marching bands, equestrian units and other vehicles glide along in the Tournament of Roses’ 120th annual Rose Parade. Millions more people will likely view the festivities on television. About 1,000 local young women lined up Saturday morning and Monday afternoon outside of the Tournament House in Pasadena hoping to become participants rather than spectators on the Tournament’s Rose Queen and Royal Court float.

Princess Megan Sheehan lives up to her Irish heritage, a fair lassie, indeed. Her hair is the color of a red-hued sunset that melts into the sea. Fair-skinned with deep blue eyes, Megan has a magical charm. Perhaps it is this very quality that entranced the members of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Queen and Court Committee who selected her to be one of the seven members of the Royal Court. "Being part of this prestigious court is very exciting, more than I could have ever asked for - this is a dream come true and I am so blessed," Sheehan said.

It looks like La Cañada High's Evanne Friedmann is going to be a busy young woman for the next three months as she reigns as the 93rd Rose Queen. How exciting for her! Imagine having as much grace and poise as Evanne has at the age of 17. The TofR's queen selection committee must have recognized a certain something in her character that gives them the confidence to award her the crown. We can all be proud that she's one of ours. We also like to claim the Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy and Flintridge Prep students who are named to the royal court as our own, even if they live in other communities.
