LAFC girls’ U11 wins Chivas Cup The LAFC girls’ under-11 team won the Chivas Cup gold division the weekend of May 3rd and 4th. In four games, the girls scored nine goals and allowed only one to win the tournament. The 2009 CIF playoffs are almost upon us. Let’s take a look at some of the teams. For the first round, the girls’ teams play tonight; the boys teams played late Wednesday night, too late to report. Check out the La Cañada sports blog tomorrow mid-day to find out how they did.   La Cañada boys The Spartans boys’ team goes in with a 19-7 record, 6-4 in league, good enough for third place in Rio Hondo. Sadly, a number of their losses were by less than five points, a couple even on buzzer beaters.

LA CAÑADA - Flintridge Prep's boys' volleyball team extended its Prep League winning streak to 10 matches with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-21 sweep over visiting Rio Hondo Prep on Friday afternoon. Still, Rebels Coach Sean Beattie said his team has looked better than it did against the Kares. “It was a sloppy game on both ends,” said Beattie, whose squad hasn't dropped a game in two Prep League matches this season and improved to 8-4 overall. “We made errors we hadn't made. The following are updates on local baseball players at the minor league level. Christian Bergman (St. Francis High, 2006) starting pitcher, Tulsa Drillers: Bergman, who was named last season's California League Pitcher of the Year, is now thriving in the Texas League. He's quickly made a name for himself after pitching for the Modesto Nuts last season and diligently working his way up the ladder in the Colorado Rockies farm system. Bergman, a former All-Area Baseball Player of the Year, was selected Tuesday to participate in the league's 77th all-star game on June 25 in Springdale, Ark., for the North Division.

The following are updates on local baseball players at the minor league level. Christian Bergman (St. Francis High, 2006) starting pitcher, Tulsa Drillers: If there was any question, Bergman has bounced back. The former Golden Knight standout struggled throughout July, when he posted a 5.52 earned-run average in five starts. He gave up 11 runs, 17 hits and four homers in 11 innings in his final two outings in July. Bergman opened August by recording his third career shutout in the Colorado Rockies organization Aug. 2. He allowed just three hits, three walks and struck out six in the double-A Drillers' 5-0 win over the Northwest Arkansas Naturals.
