LA CAÑADA — Everyone in La Cañada High's gym Thursday night was treated to a roller coaster when the Spartans hosted Mission Viejo in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division II-AA playoffs. Unfortunately for La Cañada, the ride didn't end how it wanted, as Mission Viejo pulled off a dramatic, five-game, 25-23, 23-25, 25-27, 26-24, 16-14, victory that left the Spartans in tears. "We had a chance, but someone just has to step up," La Cañada Coach Brock Turner said.

We have all seen the commercials. "More bang for your buck!" And that's the golden truth for this western themed roller coaster, Silver Bullet, at Knott's Berry Farm. Silver Bullt is a suspended roller coaster that zooms guests through six inversions to a height of 146 feet above the ground. Two minutes and 9 seconds is all it takes to cover 3,125 feet of unbelievably smooth track, even through the loops and spirals that make you feel like you are flying free like a bullet. Being called Silver Bullet, one would assume that the track or cars would be silver.

Each year, cross-town volleyball rivals La Cañada High School and Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy plan and strategize during preseason practice how to best defeat the other team. And for the fourth year in a row, the Tologs have come out on top. “La Cañada always comes out ready to play,” said Sacred Heart Head Coach Shelli Orlandini. “It’s a big game; LC usually bring out the masses.” But the energetic and spirited students who filled the stands at the La Cañada High School gymnasium couldn’t coax a win from the competitive Spartan squad who were defeated in three games, 22-25, 18-25, 16-25.

It was a defensive stalemate that transformed into an offensive roller coaster. It was two highly-ranked football teams playing as such. And it was the closest ? and most exciting ? ?Battle of Foothill Blvd.? in years, as St. Francis High rallied and then fended off a very game Crescenta Valley, 28-21, in the teams? annual nonleague meeting Friday night in front of a jam-packed Friedman Field. ?It was a great game,? said Falcons Coach Tony Zarrillo, whose team, ranked fourth in the CIF Southern Section Southeast Division, fell to 1-1. ?

If you ever thought gym class and cafeteria food was bad, you haven't been on "Fear Factor Live." Based on "Fear Factor," an NBC reality series, this new show at Universal Studios Hollywood will leave your skin crawling and your stomach in knots. The show is comprised of three stunts that must be performed to show that "fear is not a factor for you." Park guests can sign up to take on challenges onstage in front of a live audience. The challenges test you physically and mentally, ranging from hanging from a bar high above the stage, turning turbines to build up electricity that is then shot into your hands, or being handcuffed to a cylinder which you must spin to undo, then retrieve flags from a tank of carnivorous eels, then take the flag and hang it on a hook on a bar in the middle of a rotating platform with obstacles to knock you off, then undo your gear and chug a smoothie of bugs, decaying fish, mystery meat, and sour milk.

Jet Propulsion Laboratory employees who object to “invasive” background checks are holding their collective breath for a ruling expected Friday that will either extend an injunction or require them to comply with the ordered checks. The JPL engineers and scientists have been on a legal roller coaster since Oct. 3 when a federal judge denied their request to block the checks. It was then reviewed Oct. 5 by three judges who sit on the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal and a temporary injunction was granted.

It seems as though everyone wants a piece of the midway this year. Last week, the ?Simpsons? Ride? at Universal Studios Hollywood was reviewed, and now it?s time for Disneyland?s new midway-style attraction, Toy Story Midway Mania. On June 17, the Disneyland Resort unveiled its most technologically advanced attraction yet. It is at Disney?s California Adventure, under the California Screamin? roller coaster. Midway Mania is a 4-D ride where guests are shrunk down to the size of a toy and board ride vehicles sitting back to back with mini cannons on the front of each side and 3-D glasses in hand.

by Charly Shelton This year there is a whole plethora of attractions for Halloween at the theme parks around our area. From Disneyland to Magic Mountain, there is an incredible selection to choose from. At Disneyland, "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas" comes alive again in the Haunted Mansion. Jack Skellington and his friends from Halloween Town are trying to make Christmas, but when the two holidays collide, there are bound to be a few flaws. This attraction is only somewhat scary, children from 6 years old and up should be OK. Six Flags Magic Mountain is a big Halloween place this time of the year with the Fright Fest.
