Memorable events have taken place in La Cañada over the years. Longtime residents will recall the day in the early ?70s when the president of the United States, Richard Nixon, was delivered by helicopter to the La Cañada High School field, then driven to La Cañada Presbyterian Church to attend the wedding of Maureen Finch, daughter of Nixon?s cabinet member and former lieutenant governor of California, Robert Finch. Ten Years Ago For the first time in the history of La Cañada High School, all 21 varsity teams in every sport during the 1999-2000 school year made appearances in the CIF playoffs. The feat was announced by then-Principal Mike Leininger in a report to the school board. Twenty Years Ago A locally owned horse that wandered onto the Foothill (210) Freeway near Berkshire Avenue was killed when it was struck by a Salvation Army truck. Thirty Years Ago Seven members of the Camp Fire program in La Cañada were the only teens in the United States in the spring of 1980 to achieve the Wohelo Medallion, equivalent to the Boy Scouts Eagle and Girl Scouts Gold awards.

Ten Years Ago … It was reported that on Halloween night in 1996 three area teens were attacked and robbed of their trick-or-treat candy in the 1300 block of Descanso Drive by four-to-five attackers described as being between 16 and 20 years old. Twenty Years Ago … The LCF City Council learned there were some 220 horses being maintained on 86 residential parcels in town. Oct. 31, 1986 was the deadline for La Cañadans to register their equine companions or face a $250 fine.

Ten Years Ago La Cañada Unified School District Supt. Lorie Gonia accepted a buy-out package of a little more than $200,000 and resigned her position. “Philosophical differences” were cited by both the school board and Gonia as the reason for her departure.   Twenty Years Ago Apparently having used door keys to gain access, burglars struck at least three times at Flintridge Prep during the second half of August 1991, getting away with approximately $34,700 worth of computer equipment and other electronics.

In October 1959, Edward Eiji Tomita and his wife, Hannah, opened Eiji's Flowers on Foothill Boulevard directly across from where McDonald's is today in La Cañada Flintridge. Eiji, who as a child had cultivated flowers with his father, functioned as the buyer and traveled to the Los Angeles Flower Market multiple times a week. Hannah, who had no florist experience, taught herself floral design and also managed sales. Together, they built one of the longest-running businesses in the city, providing flowers for thousands of weddings, birthday parties, anniversaries and funerals.
