Flintridge Prep boys? volleyball Coach Sean Beattie has never been afraid to assign his best players a new position for the greater good of the team. His track record with such experiments is hard to argue with, especially considering that last year?s shuffled lineup advanced all the way to the CIF Southern Section Division V semifinals. Beattie might have to get creative again this season, as the Rebels return just two starters and will be trying some new things to best accommodate an influx of new players.

La Ca ñada Flintridge's commercial district is getting back to business, as power as come back on along Foothill Boulevard, although Southern California Edison still hasn't provided a timeline for full restoration. Traffic signals along Foothill were back online, although some are still flashing red as they await a reset. Arabo Parseghian, Public Works Management Analyst, said the city had notified L.A. County Public Works, and that all lights along Foothill should be reset and full functional within a few hours.  George Crispin, of Bramblewood Road, said that his power came back in his home yesterday afternoon, before which it had been out since Wednesday night.

The stadium crowd held their breath as Carl can up to bat. He had only one thought, drive the ball into the stands. It was a win or lose situation. Bottom on the 9th, 2 out, runners on base. Anything short of a homerun would just prolong the agony. Simplicity is the hot new trend among today?s consumers. Different measurements, fees and schedules make comparing local water rates a difficult and dizzying exercise. Think of the following chart as a Rosetta Stone for deciphering water bills that are delivered to La Cañada Flintridge residents in a variety of languages. The four agencies that serve the city bill customers two basic ways: (1) a flat fee, or service charge, meant to cover fixed operating costs, and (2) a water rate, or commodity charge, based on the amount of water each customer uses in a given period.

One person has remained in the spotlight since the April 1 runaway big rig crash in La Cañada that killed two and left 10 injured: The man who was behind the wheel of the double-decker car carrier. The trial in the case against truck driver Marcos Barbosa Costa, 44, of Massachusetts, has yet to begin, delayed as defense attorneys fight the inclusion of murder charges. In May, a grand jury indicted Costa on two counts of murder, two counts of vehicular manslaughter and three felony counts of reckless driving.

In my career I have been on location in many countries and states, in every kind of weather or type of place you can imagine. La Cañada has been the backdrop for many films and videos as well. It is hard to name a place where somebody hasn't set up a camera and crew and started shooting. I will always be grateful for the many years of adventure. Years ago, I was on location shooting a film in a convalescent facility. There was a lighting problem on set, and I knew there was going to be a long break while they re-set the lights.

On Jan. 25, the power in many of our homes shut off completely again. According to my records, this is the 18th time in two years. The Sunday before, there were two power outages lasting a few minutes. I was angry and disappointed. It is obvious that if power goes out, essentially everything that requires electricity, including gas pumps, banking, purchasing of food and other trading, stops. I wrote to Mayor David Spence. I complained about the last two years, which have been fraught with these many unexpected and unplanned outages.
